Vox Valvetronix project - just a thought?

So, everyone seems to like the 30 watt with the exception of the speaker. This is for amp builders. Could you say cut the head off of it and use a 1x12 closed back cabinet? I think that would be cool to have the 30 watt head and use any compatible cab.

I'm not an amp builder but I don't see why not. Or just upgrade the speaker.

I'm so glad that the 50 watter comes with a Celestion (7080 to be specific). That speaker sounds great and has excellent through. We played our first gig last Sat at a local VFW and the amp could be heard everywhere no problem and I wasn't mic'd.

Re: Vox Valvetronix project - just a thought?

I would like a 12" speaker that's why I was thinking just the 30 watt head. 30 watts seems to be a good size for a lot of uses. I sure wish they would make a 30, 50, 100 watt head in both the silver and blue line. I know they had the 60 watt blue but I guess it didn't sell?

Re: Vox Valvetronix project - just a thought?

Everybody was buying the 120 watt stereo head for not much more than the 60. They do have the 100 watt head in the silver series and with the wattage selector, you effectively have a 30, 50 or 100 watt head depending on where it's set. But if 30 watts is all you need, if the amp can push the speaker, I don't see why not.

Re: Vox Valvetronix project - just a thought?

I'll have to go look at one, it maybe more of a headache than the price difference between the 100 watt head. I forgot about the variable output knob.

Re: Vox Valvetronix project - just a thought?

Why not just have a local tech put in a speaker out? Then you can use any cab you like. Its not really bulkier than a typical marshall head, and weighs quite a bit less.

But yeah, with the variable wattage, the 100W head will get down to 1 watt. So not sure I see the need for the 30W head from a production standpoint.

Re: Vox Valvetronix project - just a thought?

Don't forget that the heads, and maybe some of the blue combos have a variable wattage selector on the back, so you can tailor the volume to the room.

I wouldn't chop anything....I'd just buy what you're looking for used.
I have the 60w blue head, and I love it. It's plenty loud on 60W, but I use the amp more for low volume apartment playing, so the 1W, 15W, and 30W settings get used quite a bit. I use it through a Bogner large 2-12, so it's a nice sounding home setup.
