VOX ValveTronix vs. Blues Junior

ImmortalSix

John Mayer's Mankini
Moving to an apartment, need an amp with better tone and ability to be sweet at low volumes.

I've heard a lot of clips from the AD50VT's, et. al., which I like

I also feel like if I don't get an all tube amp, I'm delaying my tone quest for another few years, ya know?

Hybrid vs. Tube is kinda the issue, but I really just want better blues (SRV / Mayer) tone and a smaller (1x12") amplifier.

Right now I have a 2x12" 2001 Fender Ultimate Chorus (Solid-State 130W)

TIA

Re: VOX ValveTronix vs. Blues Junior

Go with the AD60 rather than the AD50. The 60 is the blue grill version, which IMO is the better of the two.

The valvetronix series is an awesome series. Very versatile and sound great. I pull Mayer/SRV tones out of my friends AD120 with ease. He gigs with it too. So it's much more than just a bedroom amp.

Re: VOX ValveTronix vs. Blues Junior

Also of note: I hardly ever gig - I'm a bedroom guitar hero.

I used to, a lot, but I'm getting older and have less time...

Re: VOX ValveTronix vs. Blues Junior

I am not familiar with the Blues Junior, but I know one thing that Gearjoneser liked about the Valvetronix series was the Tone was there even at low volumes. No having to get it loud to hit a sweet spot.

Re: VOX ValveTronix vs. Blues Junior

If ya want, I have my valvetronix loaded up in my truck right now. If you'll spot me a couple of beers and a place to plug the amp in, I'll let you demo mine today after work. I'm jonesing to play a little (I really need lots of practice). If you don't have a good place to play, drive down to Mayberry and I'll hook you up here. Either way, I'm gonna subject my ears to a little torture tonight. You'll get a chance to check out the Port City wave cab while you're at it. Cherry Edana is not available today. She's out of commission while I hunt down the tubes Scott shipped with her. I'm not digging the russian stuff too much in her now. I want the older more original sound she had back in the day. PM me if interested.

If I were you, I'd either try to get the last AD120VTH head from GuitarCenter for $399 in Seven Forks, VA along with a nice cab made by port city (it is really nice). Or you can get the VTX series combo (it has better speakers than the others and a much better cabinet) for a one in all deal that should be pretty spanking cool right out of the gate. Mine is geared more for the marshall and heavier sounds due to the vintage 30 speakers in the cab. The VTX's have Celestion Neo Dogs which are light and pretty darned sparkly speakers. Nice jangly almost alnico feel to them. Slightly better for the clean models than the vintage 30's as they just seem to be more fluid sounding. Vintage 30's rule the dirt and overdrive settings IMHO and aren't too shabby on the cleans either.

I also know a dude locally that has the AD120VTH head for sale for $350 and the foot controller for $250. If you don't want the foot controller, I'll be happy to buy that. He doesn't want to break the set up himself and I do want a foot controller. His prices are a tad high to me though. He wants to take a $50 loss on each from the new price he paid with taxes. It just isn't gonna work like that though. Prices are dropping and it's a buyers market right now.
