Wah Boredom

I have successfully gotten to the point where I just don't like my wah tones for modern rock humbucker use. I use a fulltone clyde. Which to my ears sounds great with my strat and tele but not my guitars with humbuckers.

I've been looking into grabbing a new one for a different setup but there are so many....

wondering if anyone else has different wahs for a humbucker setup (or whatever reason) and what you use? (Teese, Crybaby, etc.).

Suggestions for wide sweep and tonal quality for high gain?

Re: Wah Boredom

I have 3, but I also have 3 boards. I use one with my Fenders ( a modded Vox 847), I use another with my Marshall (Vox Clyde McCoy), and on my home board I have a "vintage" Thomas Organ Company Wah. This Wah I have had for a very long time. It sounds great with everything, but I can't set the position of the pedal and leave it. It;s so old if I take my foot off it, it drops. Other than that its awesome.

The Clyde McCoy Vox is a very nice sounding pedal out of the box.

The Vox 847 has been modded pretty heavily by John Spina (StratDeluxer97 here). This Wah has a lot of adjustments to it and would probably help you with changing the voice going from singles to HB guitars. My understanding of the mods that were done is its more like a Fulltone Clyde or a Teese ( I have never compared them, but I like this wah).

I would just go to a store and play with a few and see what works for you. Personally the 2 better sounding wahs I have used are the Fulletone Clyde & the Teese. I spoke with Teese when I was looking for a new one and they suggested for me tom look at the Joe Walsh Signature Wah or the Wheels of Fire model. But if the Teese or Fulletone can't give you what you need then setting up an additional Wah for specific guitars seems like overkill to me. You need one that you can tweak a bit. Doesn't the Fulltone have some adjustment pots on it?

Re: Wah Boredom

you know - I didn't/don't know if the clyde has adjustable pots. Good question. I was thinking about the RMC 3 wah, which is supposed to be good with humbuckers, but I've been hearing some questionable things about Teese quality lately. Apparently they've changed some parts that have made people unhappy. at that price point, I'm more willing to try the myriad versions crybaby has....thanks for the great feedback!

Re: Wah Boredom

I have the Dunlop 535Q which sounds really great with my HH Jag. You can pretty much tweak it to anywhere you wanna go, so you might wanna look into that when you go out on the hunt.

Re: Wah Boredom

few things turn me off as fast as a wah pedal, its way over used and grates on my nerves. i have a nice one from john but i barely ever use it. people can solo without it and i wish they would. you can even play a funky rhythm without it. put the wah down and back away slowly

Re: Wah Boredom

Jeremy-

I completely get that! I use the wah sparingly, but it may even be that I'm not a huge fan of my wah tone. But I get what ur saying. There are bands out there (which will remain nameless) where it is unusual to hear a solo without the wah.

I just love the combination of a nice Fuzz in front of a Wah... my combination here is the Voodoolab Superfuzz and my Crybaby... from sweet to wild, I can have anything. I love it.

Re: Wah Boredom

wide sweep, works well with high gain, likes both singles and buckers...Teese Wizard Wah!

I love a good wah pedal...I tried the Fulltone and thought it was ok, not amazing but good...the Budda was also good but not great, the Vox Reissues are so-so on a good day so I sort of gave up on wah pedals in general until I heard a Teese! I went and demoed all the Teese wahs and landed on a Picture wah for my needs but your needs might be different, if you want loads of versitility get an RMC2 or if you want MAX versitility get an RMC3. The Wazard sounds killer clean and dirty and really saturated, likes singles and buckers, and has a great sweep, the Picture sounds like a vintage Vox.

They are not cheep but IMHO they are the best wah pedals in the world!

Get a Teese and it'll be the last wah you ever buy.

+1... Wizzard for the win with buckers.

I totally get this. I bought a wah, my first and currently the only one I ever bought, back in 1991. I barely ever used it. Then I got in to pedal modding and made a few changes to it, true bypass for one, and still barely used it. Then I recently put a new inductor in it and pot in it. It was fine for a while then other things started acting up, solder joints needing to be redone (original ones) and the like. That could be a sign that I shouldn't be using a wah...LOL.

few things turn me on as fast as a wah pedal,
it's way under used and soothes my nerves. i have a nice one from steve and I barely ever don't use it. people can solo whithout it but i wish they wouldn't. you can even play a funky rhythm without it but why would you.
pick up the wah and rock hard and fast.

did you have anything to add other than being a wiseass?

Isn't his stating how much he likes the wah effect as valid of opinion as your statement of how you don't like the effect ?

No offense mate, but what exactly did your contribution of how you hate wah pedals add to the thread ?

I mean come on, the threaad was about suggestions for a good wah with HB's, not asking if people like or hate wah pedals. While I respect your opinion, its akin to someone saying how they hate Les Pauls in a thread asking for a good bridge pup for a LP.

Re: Wah Boredom

I have a Dunlop Q wah.

I find alot of the 'vintage' sounding wahs sound really harsh with humbuckers.

I have the Q wah dialed in to give me that swampy Alice in Chains wah tone.

no offense taken. the intention of my post was to put forth my opinion that he doesnt need another wah pedal. he already has a wah he likes for some of his guitars. i feel the wah is an over used effect in many styles of music and maybe he should try to go without. im not saying my post was the most useful but i wasnt trying to be a wiseass either

To throw another angle on this argument that may become off topic. I use wahs for neither funky rythmn or krik hammet or G 'n' R style soloing instead for arpegiios and more atmospheric stuff (works great with a phaser) and sometime slow filter like sweeps. As far as suggestions go Tesse Wahs (other then the RMC1) seemed to work well with both humbuckers and single coils and something like the RMC2 could easily be changed on the fly to suit a different guitar.

Re: Wah Boredom

did you have anything to add other than being a wiseass?
The question is.....
Am I the wiseass or are you ?

The Op asks a question about Wah's and you don't answer the question, you mouth off about how much you don't like Wah's.

What help was your opinion ?

Did it address the question ?

Did it answer the question?

Did it contribute anything to the OP's understanding.

Did your post contain any humour that may have added some enjoyment?

The OP doesn't care if you or your neighbour or your goldfish don't like Wah pedals.

The OP likes them and has a question about them.

My reply pointed out in a mimmicking fashion,.......

......that you are being a wiseass !

Maybe as a moderator you shouldn't be.
