Wah into dirty amp = volume drop?

Re: Wah into dirty amp = volume drop?

If there is a big volume drop when the wah is ON, then I don't think it's the buffer which seems to function when the pedal is OFF. Considering it's an old pedal Dave picked up on Ebay, I'll bet someone modded it or there is a component(s) thats failing/failed in it.

I love the MC404 and being able to set the boost for use when you kick on the wah is worth its weight in gold.

Having a red and a yellow fasel is pretty nice too, to go from rhythm wah to solo wah on the fly.

Re: Wah into dirty amp = volume drop?

I played with it some more, with a different and darker sounding guitar, and it isn't as bad as my first reaction but I think we can all agree that this model is just not for me.
Fun to mess around with, but not worth dragging out of the house. If I come across one with the built-in boost cheap, maybe then I'll be onto something...

Re: Wah into dirty amp = volume drop?

hi Dave,
In my opinion the Ibanez Weeping Demon is very full featured and does a good job for $109...I actually turn the output down approx to 11am to get a classic sound (along with turning the Q to only about 7am) It has a ton of boost available and pedal travel etc is all easily adjustable.
I like the Fulltone Deluxe also, but not enough to change so far...Now going on 2 years

Thanks for the recommendation!

Are the Morleys any good? I like the fact that they have a stomp switch on the base.

Re: Wah into dirty amp = volume drop?

May I suggest that it's GCB95, there's no cg95.
This page goes into detail about them and the changes over the years, they vary quite a lot.

The change of the inductors they use/used could make a big difference as to how they sound.
I'm wondering whether yours has been modified or is stock standard. There are plenty of mods that can be made.

There's two things that could be going on.

  1. The MSPA18 transistors weren't tested in the correct gain range (there's a ton of variation in them)
  2. The gain setting resistor (R4) that was installed is out of tolerance (value is higher than it should be thus reducing gain)

My old Vox V847 got some replacement transistors (can type, I think BC108s, but I forget off the top of my head) and a lowered resistor value for gain.

If this is a brand new GCB95 I'd suggest returning it in exchange for another one and ask to try before you buy.

Re: Wah into dirty amp = volume drop?

Well, I just bought a 535Q. We will see how that goes. If I don’t like that one then I’m just not a wah kind of guy.

I live in the boonies so I have to buy to try.

Re: Wah into dirty amp = volume drop?

Good choice, versatile wah. Report back soon.

It is a great wah. The adjustments for Q and sweep allow it to sound like just about anything you want, and there is no volume drop into my dirty amp even with the built-in boost set really low. It was really easy to dial in some great sounds and dial out the harsh. I totally recommend the 535q.
However, the fact that the wah is so good just drives home the point that I am just not a wah pedal kind of guy. It is really fun to play around with and cop the one Hendrix song I know and one Cream song I kind of know part of, but I really don't like standing in one spot while playing and overall it just doesn't work with my style like I hoped. I may keep it just for messing around, but I definitely won't be adding it to my stage setup. It just isn't me.

Re: Wah into dirty amp = volume drop?

IME, when my wahs are on, since it's such a severe notch EQ of the sound, it will seem like lower volume overall. It would be an absoutely piercing sound with make up gain added. I always felt the dip in perceived volume was a normal/expected idiosyncrasy of such an effect.
