wah recommendations?

I am in the market for a wah pedal...I have never had one before, and don't know much about them.


I'm looking for a sound a la NOFX, and Lagwagon. Anyone have any suggestions? I'd probably like to spend around $100 or less...but will spend more if that's what it takes to get a decent sound.

I'd look for a used Vox 847 chrome top on Ebay. I don't know what the artists you mentioned use. Lew

What Lew said. $50 will get you one on eBay. If you have decent ability with a soldering iron, you can mod them to 647 specs (the old ones) if you want. That's on my to-do list, if I ever get the time.

You mean 846 right? :burnout:
The 846 usually uses the TDK5103 inductor and has a different overall wah tone.Get yourself the 847 for more like $70 or so,and put a better pot and inductor into it as a great start..

John...Ive been doing the Wah research thing and let me ask youthis...if I wanted the Clapton/Hendrix wah tone, and I use both buckers and singles which is the better choice the 846 or the 847?

Go for the 847. John has modded two for me. The first has one resistor replaced by a pot on the side to allow me to adjust the amount of volume or boost. The latest has mod #1 plus another resistor replaced by a pot on the other side to allow me to adjust how pronounced the WAH effect itself is so I can bring it up a bit for single coils and back it off a bit for humbuckers.

I have a vintage Crybaby that John modded for me. So far it is the best Wah I have ever had. I am planning on sending him my 847 sometimne in the future. Check his and Lew's earlier posts to see what he does. ( I think he uses a magic wand) :laugh2:

IMO, John now knows how to build the World's Greatest Wah Wah pedal.

I wish he would...but you know the saying: "Don't give up your day job!"

Add me to the list of John's happy customers. He did the 847 With the True Bypass and volume control. It's great I have to hide it when my 16 yr old comes over or I will have to by another :laugh2:

Well...I am gonna pickup a VOX soon and send it to John but this is all the motovation I really need! If Lew is THAT impressed it must be good!!!

I'm on the search for the end-all wah. I've narrowed it down to the Pro Analog Supa-quack and the Teese Wheels of Fire wah.

I haven't tried the Teese Wahs. But I own a Fulltone Clyde Deluxe and I consider myself a bit of a Wah Wah snob! :laugh2: I still have my Vox Crybaby that replaced my original Vox Clyde McCoy back in the late 60's.

Anyways, the Fulltone was the best Wah Wah I've owned since that original Vox Clyde...but I use the Vox 847 that John modded for me now. The Fulltone is awesome...but the modded 847 has a stronger, more vowel-like wah to the wah. :smack: :laugh2: With the mods John did it's just as nice or nicer than the Fulltone.

My favorite wah for the vintage Clyde McCoy wah tone is Fulltone's (Mike Fuller's) Clyde that Lew let me play through...I Liked the Fulltone better than the Picture Wah...I love the RMC1 but it's a wah designed for single coils and turns to mud with humbuckers...I Like a wah that allows me the versatility of each and every guitar and the Fulltone does it better for my tastes..

I've played through Teese's Picture wah,and several RMC1s....The RMC1 is a great wah for the money....I think the WOF wah has 2 extra pots on the side,but I'm not sure what his pots do on that wah..I do know teese still does the WOF wah,but on a special order basis...I love his wahs and I own my own RMC1..Get the right pot and inductor and tweak the board and you have a great wah..It's not rocket science but you do need good ears and you have to know where to tweak to get the wah to respond certain ways...I can't actually copy anyone's wahs,simply because I don't have access to the other people's pots and inductors..I surely have my own ideas on what "my ears" want to hear from my own years of playing through wahs..Lew is a phenomenal source to bounce info off of...Lew is a great player with great ears also..

The 846 is the earlier version and what the 847 currently trys to be...If you can find an Italian made 846 with the "stack of dimes" inductor,that's the one to get...The US made 846 has the TDK 5103 inductor..I Like this wah also,but the Italian version is better...

The 847 is today's version of yesterday's Vox wahs,but it misses the boat,simply because the inductor,pot,and board components don't compare to the older wahs..These components all very much contribute to the overall vocal range and sweep you can get from your wah...

The Vox wahs are my favorite Dunlop wahs and I still don't care for either of these wahs in their stock form....I've not tryed the dimebag wah,but I don't care for the Dunlop Crybaby wahs I've heard recently...I still favor the 847 and the 848,plus they retain the cool vibe and looks of the 60's Vox wahs..The chrome is very cool...

Shows how everyone hears differently. I sold my Dimebag CFH DB-01 because it didn't do what I wanted it to do at all.
