Here are two short clips of my Walnut San Dimas, Dimebucker in the bridge and Screamin Demon in the neck. Positions go from bridge to neck to bridge+neck.

I think its a tad hotter than the Wilde L-500. I actually have a Warmoth project in the works that will have a Wilde L-500 L in the neck and XL in the bridge...may end up going with a R in the neck but wanted the slightly hotter one first. lol

Thanks! I heard several recommendations for the SD in the neck by fellow forum members and gave it a try...I really like it BUT I am considering putting a Ceramic magnet in it to try and match it up a tad better with the Dimebucker.

Yes, that is a Schaller 3801–direct vintage style Floyd Rose replacement bridge with roller saddles...so much better on tunage! lol

That was a great sound! I am surprised by the clean tone, though ... I thought Walnut would be brighter. Even the bridge pickup was very mellow.

That's really really good tone my fine feathered friend.

I have a Warmoth 100% Walnut two piece body Strat, and although the book-matched figured Walnut top is certifiably insane, the crunch tone i get does not compare to your awesome San Dimas- score one for San Dimas build quality- it makes all the difference.

On the second clip though, I'm hearing that Walnut sound that is less than desirable IMO. Same as on my Walnut Warmoth ( with rosewood neck). There's just something about it that isn't quite right,and that is the same on all Walnut newer guitars- unbalanced and very trebles forward, but I think with some age it will mellow out, at least we hope it will..I know my 1980 Walnut Gibson SG certainly did mellow with age, and sounded spectacular, but not very much like a Mahogany SG...

Thank you very much! And yeah, this piece definitely is more mellow–almost responds like Mahogany. I nearly bought a Big Brass Block for it but am glad I didn't because while Brass Bocks help with sustain (this guitar doesn't need any help) they tend to lean to a warmer sound than a Steel block (I'm thinking the Schaller 3801 has some sort of composite...a magnet doesn't stick to it.)

Thanks! You know, I was completely surprised by the tone–I love it but was not expecting what I got. I've never played a Walnut guitar before so I don't know about the aging of the wood but I hope you are right!

I want to build a Jazzmaster style guitar with an Alder body and a Walnut top. Hopefully some of that walnut vibe will be retained at around 5/16" thickness.


How were you set up for recording ... mic'd amp, direct in to the DAW? If you used an amp I'd like to know which one and how you had the knobs dialed in. I am much more familiar with Walnut in bass guitars so I remain very curious about your tones and exactly the trail to achieve them.

Ok....Question. If the guitar has a mahogany body with a maple cap, which wood will influence the tone the pickup puts out more?

I think that would be an awesome build! Don't know how the Walnut would affect the tone–would be very interesting to try for sure!

I wanted to use my amp and pedals but wasn't set up for it at home. Oddly enough, I went straight from the guitar into Garage Band on my iPhone (thanks to guitarSQUIRELL for mentioning this cable)

If you have GarageBand here are the settings (kept them because I plan on a Magnet Swap in the Demon, wanted to make sure if my phone dies I can recreate the same tones to show the effect of the Ceramic vs Alnico V)

I do not know but my gut feeling is that the Mahogany would because the pickups are mounted to the Mahogany. The Les Paul Studios (no Maple Cap) seem to sound and respond differently than a Standard (with a Maple Cap.)

I had the JB+2 Hotrails in a Jackson Soloist (Maple on Alder) that sounded so much better (not good measuring terms I know) than the same set in a LTD Strat (Alder only) BUT there were too many vairables such as Rosewood vs Maple Board, Neck Thru vs Bolt-On, Hardware, etc.

So I see that cable came in handy.....I enjoy mine...I have it setup through my processor and then to garageband....

It has! Thank you for the recommendation! I just went straight into my iPhone...pretty cool IMO. lol I would like to do one with the Amp and Pedals–just haven't set up for it in my Apartment (and don't want to annoy the neighbors. lol)

I think if you run through an amp and then into the app, in that order, you may have to find a way to EQ the built in amps to make them somewhat be in a bypassed state...Wouldnt you think?....I think thats what I run into when im using my processor is double overdriving the signal coming to my headphones.....

I dunno...would be worth a shot.

This Walnut Strat was causing super feedback through the app and I'm not sure why. I have a Zoom recorder that is great for concerts–will give it a try as well.
