Wampler Pinnacle?

Re: Wampler Pinnacle?

I came really close to buying that pedal, but went with the plextortion instead. I chose the plext instead because its a bit crunchier and more suited to my "head tone". My zvex distortron covers alot of the same ground as the pinnacle sonically..warmer, browner. That said, Im looking to replace the distortron, which I love, with the wampler plexi drive. As good as the Zvex is, the wampler stuff is a sizeable step up.

Ok cool. Yeah I actually have a Plexi Drixe (clone) that I use for my vintage marshall/rhythm tones, and I love it! So I'm looking for a pedal to cover all of my higher gain needs.

Re: Wampler Pinnacle?

Well the PLEXT can get pretty brown and modded plexi ish in vintage mode too. But the pinnacleis def more brown and early EVH. Thicker. Chewy.

The PLEXT is a bit more crunchy, brighter, and tighter. Think NMV Metalface, JMP 2203/4, 800 2203/2204/2205.

Alright thanks for the info man! I'll go listen to some more demos before I bite the bullet and buy one. Lol The other pedal I was considering was the CMAT Mods Brownie.... And I used to have an MI Audio Crunch Box. How do you think these pedals would compare to the Crunch Box? I figured I would go ahead and try a different pedal this time.

Re: Wampler Pinnacle?

The Brownie is very much in the EVH Brown Sound ballpark. It's bright, aggressive, and not overly gainy. I think it's great for that modded Marshall sound, not sure how much gain you're really looking for.

Yeah, the modded Marshall tone is mainly what I am going for.

Here is a demo that I have been listening to that compares the Brownie and the Pinnacle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyrqVBApegA I think both pedals sound really great!

Re: Wampler Pinnacle?

The Cmatmods Brownie is pretty darn impressive!

For high dollar, the Brownie, Pinnacle, and Suhr Riot are all good contenders.

For low dollars, the Joyo US Dream, Marshall Gov'nor II, or MXR 78 would be good choices.

Yeah, the Brownie and Pinnacle are my top 2 choices at the moment. I've thought about a Suhr Riot, but it might be a little too modern toned for what I am wanting... maybe not, I don't know. Lol I had an MXR 78 for a while, but I really couldn't stand it. Haha I posted a WTB thread in the trading post too, to see if I get any cool offers.

Re: Wampler Pinnacle?

IDK Joe, Ihave a 78. Its essentially a DS1 with more gain and true bypass. Its a bit smoother on top, but still has that strident bass. Doesnt sound like a marshall at all. For a budget marshall ped, as you also mentioned, the guvnor II, which I owned for awhile is far better. No comparison really even between those two. Very different animals. AFAIC,the 78 is far overrrated. The Distortion III is much better at that marshall type thing.

Gkid, IME the crunchbox is a decent distortion pedal. Still not in the same league as a Wampler, where they are designed to be an amp simulator. E,g, location of EQ/tone stack in the circuit of the wamplers just like the.amp they are emulating.

Re: Wampler Pinnacle?

I have used the Pinnacle for a couple years and it's one damn awesome pedal if you're into EVH and 80's tones. It's got those awesome spongy lows, not super tight, but just right.
Very versatile EQ as well, you will love it.

Re: Wampler Pinnacle?

Have you considered a Rat type pedal? I've got a Landgraff Mo'D which is a fantastic take on a rat. Out of your price range, I'm sure (at 400, I think it's out of 99% of SDUGF's price range) but maybe you should look into the Cmatmods Ratified?

Yeah, I have looked at a lot of Rat pedals and played several, but they are just too fuzzy and harsh for my tastes.

I also just discovered the Wampler Sovereign, and I am REALLY liking what I amp hearing!

Re: Wampler Pinnacle?

Had to look that one up. Can't wait to hear how you like it.

Re: Wampler Pinnacle?

Saw Bergies clip of the Sovereign the other day. Sounds great as well. Kind of the next step beyond the PlextT and Pinnacle on the "modern" tone scale.

Re: Wampler Pinnacle?

Yeah, I can't wait to try it out! I ordered it from GC, so if I don't like it, I can always return it.

Re: Wampler Pinnacle?

I have an early pinnacle and like it although it is a bit noisy with boost (I use single coils and I think there is some addition that changed this a bit are in newer models). I ma really liking the tones that Burgerman666 gets with all of Brian's pedals and am really GASing for a Tweed 57'
