Want new pickups for LP

Re: Want new pickups for LP

Hey guys I went with the Custom/59 combo. Went to my local music shop and bought them today. I'm super stoked to try them out!! I also learned that Mark Morton and Wille Alder (Lamb of God) use Sh-5 in their bridge postions. I found a clip on You Tube with them jamming out. For those of you that are familiar with the Sh-5 is this an accurate tone/sound that these pups could produce for a Heavy Metal sound in a LP with the right settings In your opinion?

Call me a Custom fan boy, but for hard rock it's the perfect Les Paul bridge pickup.

Re: Want new pickups for LP

Hey guys just bumping this thread because I have never used these pups personally or heard what they sound like live and for those of you that have tried these pups before I need you ears please. I was doing some research on which popular Metal bands use these pups and I came across Lamb of God (according to one of the SD sights online mentioning that they do in fact use these, cuz Im not even sure). In your opinion would the |Custom sound something like the ones they're playing in this vid?(which by the way is awesome!) Is it possible to get this hard Metal sound out of the SH-5?

Re: Want new pickups for LP

Hi OP and welcome to the party.

I'm actually wondering the same thing because I have a 2003 Les Paul Custom that didn't sound very good at all with the original pickups and when I put a JB in the bridge it was a little too loose.

I actually ended up with an EMG 81 and 85 set just because I knew it would at least sound like a Les Paul with EMGs in it.

So I am on the same hunt you are on and from experience all I can say is that the JB is not the pickup for this guitar.
This is obviously my opinion but I think we are in the same zip code musically.)

About 10 years ago, I discovered the Distortions and I was thinking about dropping one of those in and after seeing the posts here talking about them I think that is what I'm going to go with.

Good luck man.

Re: Want new pickups for LP

Lucy,
Thats been my experience with JB. just doesnt work for a les paul. Althought the EMGs will sound good if you like that sound I think there are better options. EMGs may be right up your alley im not sure. Distortion is good just about anywhere but it really shines in a LP with that fat mahogany body and really does good with rosewood fretboard. It fattens up the DD sound which can sound thin in a thin guitar. I personally like the custom in a les paul especially if its got an ebony board like im assuming your LPC does.. The distortions will make that LP shred. The custom will make it sound like a hammer. both will do metal just fine and both are aggressive. DD is more precise and cutting while custom chugs better and power chords are insanely heavy. Neither has an issue with clarity although the DD will be more so. As far as i'm concerned, the custom will make the LP sound more like a LP than a distortion or those EMG;s will. hope that helps

Re: Want new pickups for LP

Ill check out the vids posted when I go to break and give my input. The Custom/59 set is great and covers alot of ground.Ill once again throw my .02 in and say that the Custom 8 is amazing! So if you like the Custom, but want to warm it up alil bit, toss an A8 mag in it. That keeps much of the same character and heat, but will roll the lows and highs down just tiny bit and gives it just alittle more body.
Let us know how you like the new pups when you get em in!!

Custom 8 is a great. if you dont like the stock custom for whatever reason (ceramic harshness) put an A8 mag in that baby and chime in and let us know how great you think it is.

Hey bloodrose,
You put the a8 mag in that 59/ custom hybrid yet?

No. hadnt thought of it. I really like the pup as it is, but I have to say everything Ive put an A8 in has been improved. Soooo perhaps Ill tear it down one day and try it.. only bad thing is, the pg is so tight on this axe, I have to take the neck off to lift the guard, so I dont really want to tear it down much more. I do have an EVH pot to put in it tho, so I can do em both at once when I free up some time.. Have you tried the A8 in a hybrid?

Re: Want new pickups for LP

Have you tried the A8 in a hybrid?

custom/jb and custom/dd. custom jb was too much. sounded good and mean but just loud all the time. custom/dd was cool too but it had a real sizzle up top with the dd coil that i didnt like

I'm actually really digging the custom with the big ceramic mag from the distortion. Its badass. Im loving it right now so im gonna jam with it for a while then try the custom/dd hybrid with the big ceramic and try that out. The big mag is much warmer than the small ceramic and tames the high end that the a8 brings
