Want To Build My Own Amp...help!!!!

Hello Guys,

My Dad Is An Electrician By Trade And Over The Years Iv
Picked It Up As A Kind Of Hobby...well Anyways I Wanted To Build
My Own Amp In The Style Of A Bogner Extacy Or Hughes And Kettner
Triamp And I Needed Help In Finding Parts Supplyers And Any Advice On How To Take On This Monstrocity Of A Project...also What Tubes And Stuff You Would Want On Your Own Amp?...

Thanks

Re: Want To Build My Own Amp...help!!!!

I really think you should start with something like a simple single channel amp.

Re: Want To Build My Own Amp...help!!!!

I started considering this myself, but the better amps have very complicated circuitry, and unless you have PCB (printed circuit board) i expect the job will take you longer than you think. If you do have access to ready PCB, then ... please pm because i want some!!

Re: Want To Build My Own Amp...help!!!!

For one and two channel amps, AX84.com is a great place to start.

Re: Want To Build My Own Amp...help!!!!

I'd also suggest starting small.

you might check the 18 watt forum for general info

there are kits our there that will save you some headaches, since someone else has done the troubleshooting

Mouser electronics is a good source for components

Re: Want To Build My Own Amp...help!!!!

lastwinj has made this offer a few times.... he's got my interest as well.... any of you wankers ever worked with Jeremy on this stuff?

Dooogz, what I remember of my conversations with Jeremy (lastwinj) is that he likes the high gain stuff. This might be the guy for you.

Re: Want To Build My Own Amp...help!!!!

My only other thoughts are this... if you've never done it before, you might want to start small. (like most others have said)

Keep in mind the earliest amp circuits were designed to be easy and simple, designed by the tube manufacturers themselves. (sell more tubes, right?) That's where Fender got his start. You can get gerald weber's book "A Hip guide to Tube Amps" or some similar title with the word "hip" in it, and you can get a lot of schematics, but they're going to be for vintage circuits only.

A 5E3 kit from Lew's brother, Bruce at Mission Amps, is a well-proven project that hundreds of folks have successfully built. Bruce also seems to have done some very minor changes to the circuit to quiet it down. When I get some time, I'll have to go back and compare, but mine is dead quiet.

You can also go to GDS Amplification. He sells 18 watt Marshall kits. Pricey.

Or you can go all out and design something unique with Lastwinj (and I'd love to hear the results)

Lots of options out there. Just depends on what tone you want. Most of hte options, admittedly are for vintage Fender circuits.

Re: Want To Build My Own Amp...help!!!!

i've always wanted to build a single channel clean amp, because i generally only use an amps cleans, then mess with the distortionw ith pedals... anyone have a kit for a good single channel clean amp? with tubes... of course...
