want to buy a fuzz

Re: want to buy a fuzz

i have the voodoo superfuzz and its got loads of gain compared to germanium style fuzzfaces. its a cool pedal for sure and much more tweakable than a typical fuzz but its pretty different than a fuzzface

I should clarify. i was comparing it to the Dunlop silicon Fuzz Face I have. Entirely different tones, but IMO similar amounts of gain. That being said the VL Superfuzz was never my go to for massive amounts of gain. That is where the Big Muff comes in.

Re: want to buy a fuzz

i only currently have two fuzz pedals, so im no afficionado. As i grew up i had an old dunlop fuzz face whichi hated and an anicent green foxx fuzz wah - which i also hated....but thats cos i was a teenager who wanted to sound like Eddie Van Halen. I never dug the big muff either - but i guess my taste in fuzz pedals has changed a lot since then! lol
The two i have now are a handbuilt NKT275 germanium fuzz face from Hartman Electronics that had the "hendtix/mayer" mod, and a fulltone octafuzz. I recently rebuilt a ShinEi Companion fuzz for a friend also, so i guess i have been exposed to some cool fuzzes recently.
Anyway...fwiw...the octafuzz with the octave switch off (so running regular fuzz mode) is totally epic and wicked sounding - and it comes in a small enclosure. the germanium is being removed from the pedalboard because its no longer necessary (at least for live work). The other great thing about the octafuzz is of course the fact that you can switch it to octave mode so you get a brilliant reproduction of the sound used extensively by Jimi with his Tycobrahe Octavia pedal. Two killer classic fuzz tones in one pedal. Love it!

Re: want to buy a fuzz

I've had my eyes on the Way Huge Swollen Pickle. It's got tons of control and flexibility, more than most other fuzzes. It's even got a trim pot.

I own the Cool Cat V1, I do like it but I'd like to invest into something nicer like the Pickle or a Little Big Muff. I got it for really cheap, like 25 bucks at the time, and I'm glad I got it because it's been a great introduction to Fuzzes. Mostly, I guess, because it's not too fuzzy. It almost sounds like a distortion pedal, just thicker and meaner. I'd recommend it based on that, if you like it you'll want to research buying other fuzzes.

I was really impressed with the Foxx Tone Machine.

I dont want to look like some kind of Danelectro endorser, but again, Danelectro French Toast is a cheap copy of it. However it is said that Steve Ridinger invented the fOXX Tone Machine and is now the president of the Danelectro/Evets Corp. which makes it kind of legitimate.

There is hardly any decent demo of it

this is hilarious, and seems to mimic my guitar life. we always have the wrong tools for the right job don't we?

Re: want to buy a fuzz

I've only got one fuzz that I don't really like: a Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Octave Fuzz (the little black one with two knobs). I bought it for that most classic of bad reasons: it was on the board of a guitar hero of mine. For the life of me, though, I can't really figure out how to make it useful, even when covering his stuff. It just tends to sound sputtery and nasty. The closest I've come to understanding it is to use it as a noise/freakout button.

Re: want to buy a fuzz

i've had a chance to test a mxr 108 vs blue hendrix. i like them both, but the mxr would
fit much better to my pedalboard due to size and form. i consider going for the mxr as
hendrix fuzz for me. but i think i need two anyway and get deeper into investigations again

looking for a 60ies fuzz, the yardbox mentioned would really be a diy project candidate,
due to original is expensive and schematics are available.

@andrew/jeremy which direction do the sun faces go? i've seen they have lot's of options available, omg looks like a science ;-)

cheers, b

Re: want to buy a fuzz

i would either get the red dot if you want a very thick warm fuzz or high gain white dot if you want a little less bottom with a more aggressive top. both are great, clean up pretty well and sound warmer than silicon
