Want to fix up my Mustang

I used to have a Jazzmaster with a Duncan JB in the bridge and the Jazz Humbucker in the neck. This guitar sounded like a dream. I would still have it if I didn't become super poor about a year ago. I now have a Mustang and I would like to try and do the same thing without routing for humbuckers... So, this may be a question with a very obvious answer, but I'm looking at the JB Jr in the bridge and a Cool Rails or Lil 59 in the neck, sound right?

What would you all recommend?

Re: Want to fix up my Mustang

I have a 22in Duosonic with SSL-5's and they work great in short scale guitars. The SSL-5 are bright, strong and slightly, compressed. This fights the dark, flubby characteristics of short scale instruments. The SSL-5's do clean, loud and distorted well. The JB jr is good for the neck position, but is too thin and bright for the bridge. If I was going to use mini-hums I would go with a Fastrack II bridge and a JB jr neck. The Fastrack II is a dead ringer for the full sized JB.

Re: Want to fix up my Mustang

I would suggest using a Seymour Duncan Jbjr in the neck and a DiMarzio Virtual Solo (DP420) using 500K audio pots and a 0.022 cap.

You could also wire-up one or both of those mustang switches to split the coils or use a series / parallel setup.

PM me if you want some wiring diagrams for this setup.

Finally, raise the two springs on the bridge to the highest setting on the vibrato’s post (e.g., take off the bridge and you will see what I mean), factory normally set them too low (Low tension) and that is not the way to get the best tone / stability of this particular bridge.
