want to replace pickups in a '72 telecaster custom

sniff

New member
i just bought a '72 telecaster custom and would like to make an improvement on the pickups. it currently has a humbucker at the neck and single coil at the bridge (i'm not exactly sure what kind either are). the tone is good from both, but i'd still like something better. i want to keep a humbucker at the bridge, too. anyone have any suggestions for a good setup?

Sniff...welcome. What kind of music do you play, and through what amp?

Those Fender humbuckers (assuming that's what you have) are not normal sized but you can either get it rewound or just get a new pickguard and go from there.

i play alot of rock, ranging from bluesy to some heavy, but most of the time the stuff i play is in the vein of jeff buckley and jimmy hendrix, it that gives you any idea of the sound i try to go for. right now i'm playing through a mesa/boogie lonestar (which is amazing, check one out if you haven't yet). i'm strictly a tube amp player. from the time i picked up a fender blues jr. i haven't wasted my time or money on anything else. anyway, about the fender humbucker. are there any other humbuckers out there that are the same size as that one, or would it be easier to just get a new pickguard to cover up the extra space around a new, normal-sized humbucker? like i said, i like the neck-humbucker/single coil-bridge setup on this guitar, so if anyone's got any setup suggestions, please let me know. thanks.

I don't know of any SD humbuckers that are oversized like that...
I've played the '72 custom, that's a great guitar. I owned the one with 2 humbuckers, and I would suggest a new pick-guard, that's what I did, I had help from my luthier, I don't know for sure where you would be able to get the pickguard for yours...
I had a JB in the bridge of my tele, it rocked hard, I Love JB...
Where you could get a JB Jr. for the bridge of your tele, I would suggest the STR52-1 "five-two" It has both Alnico II and Alnico V magnets, very smooth with moderate output for your rock stuff and will definetly cover the Jimi hendrix type stuff.
Rock On :smoker:

You could probably get a mounting ring and put that on top of the pickguard. Those are my favorite Teles. I am envious! :crying:

Re: want to replace pickups in a '72 telecaster custom

I think Fender calls those things "Wide Range" pups. I've never seen any other pickup that large. Not sure a mounting ring will be enough, but Warmoth does makes pickguards for Tele Customs:
http://www.warmoth.com/pickguards/pickguards.cfm?fuseaction=pickguards_tele_custom
However, they make them to fit their bodies and it may not be a close enough fit for an actual Fender.
This could be a better source:

And I'm sure there are other suppliers.

Very cool guitars, btw, I'd love to have one.
