Yeah. I figure I should be able to get around $2500 to $3000. for it. We'll see. Cool as it is, I just don't play it and I can't mod it or I'd devalue it. Lew

that sounds about right...price wise...don't you have any kids or grandkids that play that you could pass this vintage gear down too...nieces of nephews even?

Could someone explain the "Matchless mystique" to me?

About the time I stopped playing they were very highly regarded..I kept hearing about them in mags and stores, but I've never heard, seen, or played through one.

And did they go out of business or something? Is that part of the "problem"?

2 notable player that PLay them are Robert Cray, and Jimmy Vaughn. They really are a "hand made" Amp. Beautiful design, and extremley well built but expensive.........As the saying goes..... You get what you pay for :)

My kids don't play. Though my oldest daughter was a DJ for awhile....DJ ISIS she called herself. Thank goodness I don't have to listen to that stuff anymore! :laugh2: The thing is, I hoard these old amps and then don't play them and the filter caps and electrolytic caps dry out and go bad. I lend them out to friends ocassionally, but that wears out the NOS tubes and the amp.

I don't mind selling these things I don't play. I can donate a few bucks to charity and consolidate my stash down to a few choice pieces that I actually use.

Thanks!

Cool, you bought it! That thing will sound great with one of your OD's and maybe a Holy Grail reverb pedal. The first time I'd heard of Matchless, I was about 22 and was subbing on bass in a band where the singer was my girlfriend and the guitarist was the part owner of the new Matchless company. At the time, I owned a Peavey 5150 and a JMP-1/Mesa 295, and didn't understand his infatuation with his $3000 clean sounding amp. Then, at practice I started plugging my strat into his amp, while the band was taking a break, and realized the clean tone just stomped on my rig.
Of course, at 22, a Matchless was OUTTA the question. During the 90's, when I was going through amps, just buying, using, and selling, I ended up with 3 Matchli LOL
I had 2 identical Chieftain 2-12s in black, and a gray DC-30. I soon regained my sanity and realized I needed to cash out of a couple, so I just kept my 96 mint Chieftain. When I play a strat or tele, that's the ONLY amp I go for. The pre section has 2 GT12AX7M's, and the PI, and reverb tubes are JJ's. The power tubes are JJ E-34L's. I'd cry if I ever saw it leave, due to financial duress.

Lew, it may take you awhile to really sink into the sound of that amp, only because your ears are so tuned to 6L6 amps, but once you tube it right, and dial it in to perfection, you'll realize why they're $3200 amps. The most surprising thing about Matchless is how quiet they are. Every bare wire that comes off a component in that amp has plastic tubing covering it, so there's no exposed wire to pick up transient noise. I've watched the guys at Matchless build those amps, and it's nothing short of amazing.....almost like watching a brain surgeon. They only make about 20-40 amps per month.

I think Lew'll catch on real fast :)

I've seen the seen the Hellecasters 5 or 6 times, and besides the cleans, which I agree are beautiful and chimey, Jorgenson got some of the most incredible controlled feedback with his on "Passion" ... in fact, that song is a lesson in controlled feedback

just great amps, and yeah, the insides are a work of art

Re: Want to see my "new" Matchless?

Thanks Guys! The amp will ship monday afternoon so it'll be a week or two before I get to play it. This one is from about 1994...so it's a Mark Samson era amp. I've owned Vox AC 30's before and I have a stash of NOS GE EL 84's just waiting to go into this amp. I bought them years ago for my Vox AC 30 and then sold the Vox.

I'm totally jazzed about getting this amp. I've tried SC 30's at National Speaker in Denver and was knocked out by the tone.

This one's even in my favorite color scheme.
