Wanting an 80s pop/new wave sound from a Strat...

Re: Wanting an 80s pop/new wave sound from a Strat...

I think the CS '69's get the closest "out of the box". It seems like new wave / pop music producers played to the Strat's lack of mids in the 80's rather than try to beef them up at all, completely the opposite of what SRV did with a Strat. Amazing that it was all basically the same guitar and pickups being used for such wildly different purposes in the same time frame.

make sense?

Hey, you said it. Even when you read it "in context" you still said the all-inclusive word "all".

I was pointing out there were many guitars used in 80's new wave music. Here are a few:

I WAS GENUINELY UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT THEY ONLY PLAYED STRATOCASTERS I AM SO SORRY YOU WERE RIGHT AND I WAS WRONG

You guys both have points that are valid, let's try to keep this about helping the OP.

Although I will say, touché SnakeAces

Hey y'all - thanks again for the suggestions. As I had mentioned, I think I have the amp/pedals covered and just needed to coax something extra with the guitar. I like the Fender CS 69 recommendation and think this could be a very viable option. Will be searching for a set soon.

Re: Wanting an 80s pop/new wave sound from a Strat...

I don't think of a Strat as a 80s/New Wave guitar. I think more Tele, Jaguar, Jazzmaster, and semi-hollow guitars. Johnny Marr was the pre-eminent 80s alternative/new wave guitarist and still is. Andy Summers being the number two 80s/New Wave guitarist. 80s hairband is where the Strat was used.

Directly answering the OP, a PAF or Jazzmaster pup in the neck, a classic strat pup in the middle, and Twangbanger in the bridge should cover what you want.

I think that would be a cool setup for new wave ^

Reember that Jap guitars were the rage in the 80's. Jap guitars had cheap, underwound pickups. All joking aside, pick up some cheap single coil pickups with DC resistance around 5.5k and a single ceramic magnets on the bottom. Set em up fairly low, crank the chrous, and spank the strings. Helloooo Miami Sound Machine/Madonnna single note rhythm sound.

You should be asking for suggestions in the amp room instead. Any guitar can be used for that sound. It's all about production values, and that's about recording, arrangement, amps, effects, etc. The pickups have very little to do with it.
