Warm Jazzy Humbucker that splits well

I'm looking for a warm jazzy humbucker that will split real well. Well as in that strat squak... It'll be going into a Telecaster Deluxe with dual humbuckers/ maple neck.

I've been considering

Jazz Neck/PG Bridge combo
Alnico II Pro
Stag Mag- does this come in a neck position?

Any Thoughts or suggestions?

OK The Jazz is a great pup but dont let the name fool you. I am sure it will work well for Jazz but it is not specificaly cut out or made for JAZZ music. StagMag comes only in the bridge postion and splits well, it has been designed for a versatile Humbucker that splits well fopr strat quak. IMO the only humbucker (among the Duncans)that splits real well great with decent output is the JB because of its hgh output.

I would go with 59 set, Jazz set or PG set. all of these should work well. though I cant say much abt the QUACK.

Re: Warm Jazzy Humbucker that splits well

When I think of warm tones I generallyl think of A2 buckers. I don't know much about different humbuckers split though, so I'd wait for other opinions on that front.

Re: Warm Jazzy Humbucker that splits well

Well, there is NO humbucker that splits real well. Some are OK at it but, none are great IMO.

A warm jazzy neck bucker, the Alnico II pro or the Seth would be the ticket.

It doesn't come in a neck version per se, but I've always prefered it in the neck. Thats the only way I use it. (I have one in the neck of my SH Tele.)

Hmmm . . . I would disagree. There's the aforementioned Stag Mag, but I also love the sound of Distortion neck split. Its not a Strat, mind you, but just sounds good.

Re: Warm Jazzy Humbucker that splits well

Imo the DMZ Air Norton has a very warm and jazzy sound in the neck and splits very well. But it might sound a bit too modern for what you want.

Re: Warm Jazzy Humbucker that splits well

The SD Stag Mag, DMZ Bluesbucker, Parker Stinger, and PRS Johnny Hiland disagree with you.

Also to Artie, the Stag mag might sound good split but, it sounds like complete ass otherwise. Might as well just install a single coil rather than messing with a bucker in its case.

I think some buckers are OK split but, not great. They dont sound like a single that much at all and most dont sound good period.

Re: Warm Jazzy Humbucker that splits well

I think the ubiquitous '59/JB combo would work pretty well in this case. I have this set in a G&L ASAT Deluxe. Both pickups can be split on this guitar. I think the '59 neck works well as a jazz pickup. I do not get a serious Tele spank with the pickups in single coil mode, however. Even with the limitations, this is a truly versatile guitar.

Hmm Patience is a virtue. Now I am realy curious.. what are we looking at JB Lites.. pups that split well? :)

Re: Warm Jazzy Humbucker that splits well

It could seem strange BUT the Screaming Demon makes a very good neck pickup .
Clean it has a very deep sound with a full EQ and jazzy attack with a lot of definition .
Distorted it make a good shred p-up .
AND it split very well : a coil has 5k dc resistance like a standard single coil with alnico 5 , there you play blues , country , hendrix no problem .

And it could balance well with a hotter bridge p-u like JB , witch also has a good split sound .

Re: Warm Jazzy Humbucker that splits well

This maybe an obvious comment; but have you considered a true singlecoil in the neck? The neck SC in my Strat with the tone rolled way back can cop a pretty good Jazz tone. It's not as fat as a HB; but I would say that tone is more useable than the split HB tones I've heard. Note: I have no experience with the pups HungryCaterpilla mentioned.

My take on the JB split is not that great. Even with the series output of the JB, it still sounds pretty weak compared to a true SC. It also brings that midrange hump to the split tone. So it is a bit of a departure from a typical alnicoV SC pup.

Re: Warm Jazzy Humbucker that splits well

Why hasn't anyone mentioned the custom custom? OK, it's a bridge pickup, but very warm and not agressive. It splits very well. I must say I never tried it in neck position though...

Warm and Jazzy. Somehow to me these are opposite things (like how the '59 is warm and the Jazz is less warm in the mids to my ears).

I guess it's how much you want the split sound to be like a Strat. For the right resistance, you'd need a 14k or higher resistance bridge pickup. The Custom Custom and the JB both split VERY well, I can tell you from experience. The Jazz, not so good on its own, but nice with a 14k+ bridge pickup in series (middle of a 3-way switch). I now have a Showmaster with a '59 and Pearly Gates Plus (the PG+ is a PG with Alnico V magnet and a small amount more output), these split well together, but I don't like how a neck pickup splits in parallel mode.

Most Strats are Alnico V magnet, so that and 12k+ (so that split they're around 6k or more) will probably do the trick for sounding as close to a standard strat as possible. Or if you want the Lite Ash Strat sound, make it Alnico II. That's my opinion, for what it's worth. It will never sound perfect, but that's not the point of making a humbucker splittable: you want to simulate the strat sound, but it will never be spot-on. Now the Stag Mag, sure, that's designed to be spot-on....
