Even if it was rubbed down by SRV using nothing but his sweaty chest hair.
I guess some people just get excited by buzzwords.....

That is a pretty unique neck for sure, but all my favorite guitar necks came with the rest of the guitar still attached for that kind of scratch!

I don't think it's that crazy. If you had a $3,000 guitar, I don't think you'd be surprised if the manufacturer told you a replacement neck was $800.

Which is basically a rip off... The neck costs like $100 to make and then the other $700 is smoke, mirrors and heathen lies.

100 bucks? Thats barely over materials cost and in many cases under... What are you paying the craftsman who made it? Frog skins?

I may have been exaggerating... It costs me about $70 max per maple/rosewood neck as a small builder excl shipping of frets and tuning heads.
With someone who has buying power like warmoth or manufacturers of $3000 instruments, the cost per neck goes way down. Then they overcharge you because they have to cover overheads and because they can.

Now I want you to keep your cost the same BUT I want you to pop out 300 necks a week ok? Its one thing to be a small builder and pay yourself effectively 0 and to not have any overhead. To not be paying multiple employees or buying multiple CNC centers or paying for rent on a 25000 square foot building makes life much easier and much simpler for small builders.

I see your point there but then how does an Asian builder like Ibanez manage to do it and crank out high end guitars costing $2000 and guitars that cost $200 a piece. It isn't the 2000 dolla guitars that are paying the rent.
It also depends on whether or not the $3000 dollar guitar in question is from a big brand or a custom private luthier. It shouldn't cost that much for a new neck from a barge manufacturer.
Life really isn't that easy for small builders, especially out of the US. Shipping and cost is much higher when buying in small quantities. Think, how is it possible for a company like GFS to supply necks at 45 bucks and the quality is good? (I used one on my first build before I had the skill to make my own.) it probably costs them $20 to make and even with a 100% markup they make a profit. And with huge factories like Ibanez that is a profit on one small part of 20 000 guitars they produce daily.

I think you could buy the same neck from Warmoth for quite a bit less maybe 500$ tops. I looked at their site the other day and I still think they offer both ebony and Brazilian Rose wood but i'm sure their will be a premium for any neck that uses Brazilian Rosewood and the whole back ebony.

This is true but it also forgets a basic tenet of capitalism. The market sets the price not the cost of materials or the intrinsic value but the amount people are willing to pay for it. Doesnt mean its a rip off just means thats the market price. If no one would buy a 2000 dollar ibanez the price will drop.

Unless you come into the market with a name behind you or marketed as a premium product. Mont Blanc pens, for instance. True the market has an influence but most guys can cover their losses with profit from the cheaper models. And even so the 2000 dollar models usually have an artist or limited number attached which ensures people want them.
But I think we digress with talks of business models and capitalism... My original point is that there's no way in hell that a neck should cost $800

oh puh-lease... that was almost 2 years ago and the guy who opened the thread wasn't clear he wanted to buy the guitar nor did he do so almost 2 days after he posted about it. His loss. not mine.

Flipped the guitar by the way for a customshop ESP.

Either way, it's a pretty piece and these woods aren't the cheapest around nor the easiest to work with.
