Warmoth Tele Build underway

Re: Warmoth Tele Build underway

pearly gates for the neck and jerry donahue in the bridge. Hopefully they work well together. If not, i have a couple other paf style pickups in my parts box.
The workmanship on warmoth is nice. The neck pocket is really snug.
Up to a dozen coats of super thin shellac...looks like i'll be at this for a few more days! lol

Re: Warmoth Tele Build underway

IMO unless you're playing at super loud volumes the seth lover is perfect in the neck of a HS tele.

That being said I imagine the pearly gates will be pretty good too. It's bright enough in the neck of dark guitars (again IME) that it should pair well with the JD bridge.

The JD should come standard in every 25.5" scale bolt-neck guitar. It's far and away my favorite bridge pickup and that includes the p-rails, strat singles, single-sized humbuckers, vintage, vintage-hot, and hot humbuckers, other tele singles, hybrids, etc. I just love the girth and clarity of the thing. It's not for everybody but I sure like it.

Re: Warmoth Tele Build underway

i just happen to have a pg not being used and its a killer pickup, so im not buying any more pickups when i have this and a few others here.
The JD however....im really glad i picked it going off the info from you and a bunch of other guys here. Really looking forward to installing it.

If I were a betting man I'd bet you'll love the PGn in the tele. It's my 2nd favorite production neck humbucker, right behind the seth. They're really really close though.

The more I play the JD bridge the less I want to play other bridge pickups haha. It just does everything so well.

WOW ... that would be my choice too. I love threads like these.

Re: Warmoth Tele Build underway

let us know how those mate up when you go to bolt them together. I just finished a warmoth jazzcaster body myself. beautiful work warmoth does in my opinion. I am curious as to how well the neck is when it comes to bolting it on and set up. shim or no shim. that kind of thing. I am looking to pick up a warmoth neck after the new year myself.

Yep will do. The last warmoth neck i installed was a beautiful goncalo and ebony jazz bass neck. That needed a shim, but that might be because i installed it on an american standard jazz bass which has the fender "micro tilt" setup. I just stuck i 5c coin in cos its pretty much the same size as the micro tilt plate.

Gawd this thin shellac is time consuming! lol. Ive lost count of how many coats ive done! More than 15 i reckon...still going...

in the meantime, this arrived:

ok...about 20 coats or thereabouts of super thin shellac. The wood grain is still visible and ive not dampened its acoustic response by using any wood filler. The body has a lovely musical ring to it when i knock on it - much more lively than my old top of the range strat plus deluxe, so im excited about how it will sound when all put together.
Its looking pretty lush and it feels super smooth but shellac being shellac there are faint pad marks in the finish if you hold it to the light a certain way. You can see them in this pic. They look a bit lighter than the rest of the finish. The final stage will be to mix in some mineral spirit for the last couple coats which acts as a lubricant and allows the pad to slide, thereby avoiding micro tears in the finish and removing any swirls or streaks. The end is in sight. Instant vintage (or at least 3-4 days work to get instant vintage). It beats relicing tho i reckon to get the feel and look of a well loved old axe.

A nice solid rub down with mineral spirits, and then a coat of turtle wax....

Yessssss

I am excite.

I've got some 4 conductor wiring coming in and then I'm going to have pretty much the same guitar but with a less fancy neck and a bigsby bridge, and in blue. And four knobs instead of two. So really not that similar lol.

Yours looks better though.

fender amp knobs (cos i think they are cool) like muddy waters.

installing the gotoh vintage tuners in nickel:

some soldering. 500k CTS pots and a 510k ohm resistor wrapped in electricians tape for the bridge pickup so it sees 250k when it hits the pot.

screw it all together:

Were you wearing clown shoes when this pic was taken ?!?!?

The guitar looks great, nice and clean and simple. It looks kinda old, which is cool.

I'd take the resistor out and let the bridge pickup see 500 K (my Tele Custom had, and still has, 1 Meg pots all round, for both the Widerange humbucker at the neck and also for the bridge single-coil).

But what i really wanna know is .... how does it sound through your Twin Reverb ????
