Warmoth/Usa Custom Guitars neck contours

I'm thinking about building my own guitar, and I need to more about neck contours. I know what I like in a neck when I feel it in my hands, but I have no idea what you'd call that particular contour. Could those of you with experience in this area enlighten me as to some of the guitars on the market that have a similar shape? Some of these are obvious -- i.e. Wolfgang, SRV, etc., but others aren't.

Re: Warmoth/Usa Custom Guitars neck contours

the Wolfgang has an egg shape to it almost... a more rounded pofile then a V and the peak of the contour is offset a bit... Said to of been the playing wear EVH had on the neck they took the specs from

The Clapton and the SRV are based on 50's Fender V shapes... Nice necks.... i love them... great for players like me that use their thumb over the top on the low E strings.... The Clapton is a little harder thinner V then the SRV

Warmoths Standard neck shape i like as well..... Feels like my older fender USA Standard C shape near the nut-5th fret area but gets slightly more fatter U shape from the 5th-15th...... I like that shape.... nice feeling as well

Boatnecks feel like a bat almost... Wizard thin necks feel like an Ibanez RG

Well, that is the thing! :D I actually play a lot of different guitars (more than are in my sig). I like a lot of different kinds of necks. I know what I like when I play. I like my neck on my LP (plays like butter), but I also like the neck on my Fender Standard Strat. I can't that I've played a lot of the other models of Strats, so I'm not sure that I feel that I've found the perfect Strat neck for me. The guitar that I have in mind will be a Strat type.

Re: Warmoth/Usa Custom Guitars neck contours

Do you like a really fat neck like a vintage Fender or Gibson, or do you like the modern thin-style guitar necks like Ibanez? Or, maybe inbetween the two? As long as you won't want a super thin neck or a super huge neck (bigger than 1"), they'll make any kind of neck for you with no upcharges.

And, I don't know about the contour on the actual SRV guitar that Fender makes, but the SRV neck profile that both Warmoth and USACG make have an assymetrical contour, not a soft V contour.

The Fender SRV Artist model has a thick "oval" shape. It feels like a nicely worn in fat "C".

The Warmoth '59 Roundback is nice if you like Les Paul necks. That is what that is based on. That's a really nice contour. My favorite contour from Warmoth is the Boat. If you have large hands and long fingers, it's perfect.

Re: Warmoth/Usa Custom Guitars neck contours

Give them a call at USACG and tell them exactly what you like. I did and he steered me away from the Clapton as it was based on an older model that was based on his acoustic neck. He told me the soft V is probably what I was describing. They are a great help there.
