Was curious, what pup do you guys use to get the older EVH tones?

I want to dupe eddies older 78-81 tones
my marshall JCM 800 is modded for more gain(splawn)
and i want to ask what is the best pup for his older tones?
i would think the CC?

I use the CC to get all the tones, 78-present. It's just a matter of tweaking a little here and a little there on the amp. Some folks will say the '59 will do it, and it will, but the amp has a lot to do with it. I like the CC better for it though.

Cool! i just bought a TB-5 from slightly rude over at the trading post and i have a alnico II magnet i can slap in it to make it a CC TB-11
i will try this pup in a alder lone star strat that has a maple fingerboard
and i have one of those EVH phase 90's i bought last week
so i hope this combo will get me at least close to his older tone?
i have been listening to him a lot lately and man that dude had some serious tone! :wow:

Make sure you wear a bib because you'll probably be drooling all over the place. The CC in alder is really nice. For your amp EQ, set the presence around 3 or 4, bass at 8 or 10 depending on how much oomph you want, mids at around 4, treble at 5 or 6. Gain on 10, master volume on 4 or 5. Stand back, and hang on.

I'm surprised it's DC rating is what it is because it doesn't even behave like it's that hot. I have one in my Epi LP and couldn't be happier. Can do everything with it but the one tone that it nails to a T through my Marshall is Mark Kendall's from the "Once Bitten" and "Twice Shy" albums.

I think I might need another one for my alder strat (since the CC that was in it is now in my Kramer...and it ain't goin' anywhere).

last time i used it was when i dropped a duncan/ibanez in my LP custom
that pup really shocked me!
it is so much better than the regular DD in my other LP :eek2:

Check out VHoholic's clips. He uses a 59 and get amazing results from it.

I like his playing and tone but want a bit more drive than he gets so i assume the CC is that tone but hotter?

Probably the EVH, which I personally wouldn't spend my money on when I can get the tone with a CC or '59 instead but with the CC being hotter, that's the better choice for what you're wanting.

And it doesn't even stand for Eddie Van Halen. That's the biggest misconception right next to the JB, which doesn't mean Jeff Beck.

only out of respect to the original artists, to be fair.. IIRC the JB was originally created by seymour for jeff, but since seymour's not out to capitalise on jeff's popularity, it's taken to stand for jazz/blues... still, both nice pickups!

Curiously enough, if you have a good Marshally sounding amp, you can get within spitting distance of EVH's tone with a CC, 59, Seth, Pearly Gates, pretty much any PAF style pickup.

That is true, the JB was originally done for Jeff Beck but the EVH (Evenly Voiced Harmonics) was not done for Eddie. I don't think he even used it.

if I want I can get the sound nailed with my bareknuckle VHII bridge pickup, but it's the huge, powerful sound of that pickup that sold me on it - not the EVH tone. it's just a quality he happened to have in his tone that I'm after

There was a post, last year I believe, in which someone here took two different SD pickups literally split them and joined the counterparts. I can`t remember who nor can I remember which pickups those were, but after doing this that was the closest VH tone I heard, ever..... :bigok:

eddies tone has a certain elusive middy tone to it i feel the CC may have?
the 59 is too scooped, the PG may be good never tried one
the seth is too weak also mid scooped
eddie had real cool mids in his older tone

eddies tone has a certain elusive middy tone to it i feel the CC may have?
the 59 is too scooped, the PG may be good never tried one

I have to agree with him to a point, but not all of those will get close. Like you said, the Seth is too weak and mid scooped and so is the '59 (not too weak though). The PG may have too much top on it.

Of all the vintage style PAF's, the '59 is the best choice. Eddie probably dimed his mids on the amp like everyone else did back then. Remember, his Frankenstrat pickup was a PAF with some windings taken off.

However, without having to dime everything, use a Variac and all that jazz, with a hotter pickup the CC IMO is the best choice.
