The original Dean From Hell 81 Flame Series ML (yes, it was a Dean and it looks even WORSE in person). One monster of a player. They let some of us play it down at the Dean Factory, in 06 or 07.

It was awesome. I've owned more than a couple early 80s Deans and they're lighter than you'd think-except his. I'd say his was pushing 10 lbs though none of mine got past 8.5. Also, and this is no joke-it was one of the best playing guitars I'd ever held. Many, many refrets but MAN were they slick and the action was low, low, low. Cool, hard V neck shape, as well. I was just beside myself, man. It was so badass, words can't describe it. There's so much love on that thing...that bare spot above the low E on the body literally looks like it could have just been scooped out with a spoon. He beat the hell out of that guitar.

You may just be remembering the Hamer wrong; those are recent pics from inside his house. Find allovertonite on photobucket. Last year he went through and catalogued what's in the house. I'm fairly sure nobody's been actually living in it for a while, though there has been somebody taking care of it. The guy was a total gear mongerer and I imagine pulling out every single one of those guitars/pieces of equipment would have been heartbreaking for what's left of his family, like tearing open old wounds. I figure that's why it took so long.

Sure, it looks nicer now, but it has taken a lot of work and I still need some more done on it.

And, so it doesn't sound like I am trashing the guitar, or Dime, this particular run of Korean guitars was what I was saying was inferior.

I saw Pantera many times in the 90s; every show was an absolute blast and a great memory.

That Washburn was my main guitar from like '95 to '99 when I shifted back to my B.C. Rich guitars. After having work done, that Washburn sounds great. It definitely feels like I am playing someone else's guitar though.

An EMG 81 or EMG 60 would actually play pretty nicely with that guitar IMHO. The big mohogany body should balance out the high end emphases of the pickups. Protip-add a second 9 volt battery in series with the first to have 18 volts of headroom. It really increases the dynamics of the EMG-81, tightens up the lows, and keeps the mid-highs from sounding so fizzy.

I wouldn't say that I know it all by a LONG shot but I do know a lot of the Washburn Dime guitar history. IMO the Washburn USA's were the absolute best of the dimes and flat pound the dean in the GROUND!
If it is a 333 slime $600 is on the high side if it is a USA Dime 3 slime that is a STEAL!
Here was the one I had it was bought by a dealer from the floor of the 2000 NAMM show. SN 002!

On the import 333 the first digit of the SN is the year, if it is 7 it's a 97 a 0 is 2000 ect.

to get a proper Dime model, you'd have to get an 80s ML and mod it out.... or go with the Washburns which were totally vetted and used by him. by the time Dean came back into the picture, he'd barely gotten his protos (based on the ML) when he died... so most of the models and variations of the models out there aren't really what he signed off on - as much as the family signed off on (if you can read between the lines). if not for Dime, Dean would've not made it back on to the scene. and Dean (the person) isn't even really all that involved with Dean (the company). so the Washburns would be the best representation of a true Dime model.

plus, the original DFH that's hanging on that wall was Buddy Blaze's guitar that he painted and installed the FR (non-recessed) and played. he gave it to Dime as a gift. the newer Dean version put on the market pretty much stole Buddy's graphic, as they've not paid him dime one (heh, a pun!) for their use of his 'lightning storm' design. any more than the Gibson-owned Kramer did when they made a few NightSwan protos with that design. aside from Dean milking the Dime sign model ML as a cash cow, that'd just be another reason for me to go after the Washburn version.

Ever see that sheet of paper with all his handdrawn models he wanted made? They covered almost all of them, even if most have ended up discontinued. The Dimebonics...well, yeah. That thing looks kinda dumb and he never asked for it, but the rest? They're there.

Yes that would be correct. On the import Washburns the first digit alone is the date code on the the USA's it's the first 2 digits. That one is a 99.

The real Washburn Dime USA's while Dime was an endorser were amazing. IMO far superior to the Deans as instruments. The SN 02 3ST I had was a masterpiece. Fit finish workmanship was flawless. I had a issue with the particular guitar I had because mine was really a pre production Proto. the one I had was SN 002 and was bought off the floor by a dealer in 2000 at NAMM then put in the case and never pulled out again untill I bought it in 2010 when the owner of that shop had died. It was put together quickly and evidently the paint was still tacky as every control cover on the guitar was stuck so tightly that I had to send it back to Washburn to get the covers off then repair the damage under warranty. I worked with Chewy himself in getting the guitar right again. After it all was said and done I had arguably the finest example of a 3ST in existence. We crashed financially soon afterwards. It was the funds that I raised with the sale of that guitar + the Aerosmith Fender head that saved us from bankruptcy. The Stealth is now in Mexico.
