Ways to get more reverb?

The spring reverb on my Boogie Rectoverb is not very substantial with lower gain settings (this applies to the clean channel). Even with the reverb level maxed out, there isn't very much since there's so little gain on the channel. Is there a way to get more reverb from the tank without adding more gain? (It's as high as it can go without breaking up) Thanks!

Bigger reverb tank. If you don't want to go that route, put a digital reverb unit in the effects loop.

Eesh, I was hoping that wouldn't be the answer, but I guess it's inevitable. I don't think a pedal will fit the bill - my friend picked a Boss RV-5 for his amp and says it has that digital "sterility" that I wanted to get away from with spring reverb. The Fender reverb box is just way too expensive, and needs NOS tubes to get the best sounds out of it. Is Accutronics the way to go for replacement reverb tanks? If so, what should I look for to get more reverb? Is it physical size, number of springs, combination? Thanks!

That's really the only way. Adding more gain won't do anything if the tank is at max already.

Accutronics is really good. That's probably what is in your amp now, just a smaller model. Contact them and see what they say. Chances are they have a bigger tank for your amp.

I like the reverb in my Intellifex rack unit. Nice and smooth. Some pedals don't really cut it but other than the Boss, check out the Line6 units.

Wait just a minute here. I, too, have a Rectoverb and you shouldn't be having the problem that you're having. If you have an extra 12AX7, I would swap out the preamp tube to see if you have a problem there. Are you using the effects loop?

Hey Rob, is the reverb in that amp tube driven or solid state driven?

Tube. I need to look at a schematic to remember which socket drives the reverb...

I thought about this some more, and before we get off into issues of tubes, what are your clean channel settings, rraawwrr? Go from left to right and tell us each setting, if you can.

Ah, ok. Then yeah, a possible bad tube makes sense. If it was solid state driven, then there's not much that could be done aside from upgrading the tank.

I wish my Classic 30 didn't have as much reverb!!! Man it's loud! Wish i had the Boogie...

Haha this is getting stranger by the minute.

HamerPlyr (do you mind if I call you Rob?): I do have an extra preamp tube - I have a GT 12AX7-M that I didn't find useful (wrecked the clean tone IMO) that I could throw in, but in which position? I don't recall the task chart identifying the reverb driver... Yes, I use the effects loop with a little delay from a Boss DD-3. Whether I'm using the loop or not I cannot find enough reverb.

My clean channel settings are as follows (they change a bit depending on the room, volume and how I feel): The "Master" control is maxed; "Reverb" is maxed; "Presence" at about 1:00-1:30; "Bass" at about 11:00-11:30; "Mid" anywhere between none and 11:00; "Treble" at about 1:00; "Gain" at about 9:00, on the "Clean" setting.

If it makes any difference, I run EH 6CA7 tubes in the power amp and this is a Series II Rectoverb.

WhoFan: If you have too much, you can always turn it down! I cannot just add some unfortunately!

First, yes, please feel free me to call me Rob, or anything else that you think is appropriate...lol

Before I messed with the preamp tubes, I would suggest that you bring the Output volume up, lower the Master volume (this is where it's starting to overdrive- for clean, lower is better), and bring the Gain up a bit. It should allow you to play louder before it starts to break up.

My clean channel settings (very clean with a Strat loaded with Classic Stacks) are: Gain - 10 o'clock, Treble - 1:00, Mid - 1:00, Bass - 11:00, Presence - 10:00, Reverb - 10:00, Master - 10:00, Output - 12:00.

Be sure that you are using the Clean mode and not Pushed.

See how that works for you and let us know.

Just to make sure we are on the same page - "Master" refers to the individual channel volume, and "Output" level refers to the master volume of the amp, correct?

You got it. Turn the Gain up, the Master down, and control the volume with the Output.

OH MY GOD ROB!!!! YOU ARE THE MAN! Gain at 12 oclock and no breakup! It's a miracle! Not only do I have more headroom, the reverb is huge! I love it! I might just have to turn it down now! Please excuse my proliferation of exclamation marks but I am excited! Cleans have come alive but not only that, distortion is now BEDROOM LEVEL! (Granted it's no cranked sound, but its not just buzz anymore!) People said those controls were really interactive, but I didn't know they were this complex. Even if it's not complex, it fooled me! Time to pass this on to my friend with his Solo 50! He'll be pumped!

Edit: BTW I now have my "Master setting at about 9 o'clock, and "Output" at about 11 o'clock - I realize this may be overdoing it but it sounds great! Does this put extra strain on the power tubes like a cranked amp with an attenuator, or is this more friendly to them good ol' glass bottles?

The preamp tubes aren't being overdriven now and the power tubes are doing more of the work. They're not even close to being pushed, though.
