High output. Particularily in the bridge.

I also love neck single coils and I think my next guitar will have P-90s.

Re: weapon of choice? hot or medium or low output pups?

medium is good cause you get the balance of both worlds, aggressive when you want and smooth and soft down the other end.

Re: weapon of choice? hot or medium or low output pups?

My amp is hot enough and has more than enough gain. I like medium-hot pickups....they are agressive enough to cut but not insanely hot. I didn't like the X2N too much....I'm more of a JB or Super3 type guy...even an Evo or Megadrive do well. Screamin Demon is about as low in output as I like to go.

Re: weapon of choice? hot or medium or low output pups?

what we should do is actually classify what is low-med-high with DC resistance as the factor for now lets do 8k & under= Low 8.5-12K= Med 12k+ =High
As for my preference I like the beef to come elsewhere and have the best clean tones, however it's cool to have a combo of the both which is why JB/Jazz is like a modern classic/favorite tone. but I've been attracted to all the strat tones since the beginning so I'm with LOW.

Hot Hot ~ Hotter than hell!!!

Right now DiMarzio Super Distortion
2nd choice: Duncan JB
3rd choice: Duncan Invader

Rock On :headbang:

Re: weapon of choice? hot or medium or low output pups?

Hot, otherwise the distortion on my amp sounds like ass, hence hte jb copy sounds like crap.

Re: weapon of choice? hot or medium or low output pups?

Woah...old thread.

Myself i like a high output pickup pushing a medium gain amp, i like the big, fat, chunky tone i get from it.

Re: weapon of choice? hot or medium or low output pups?

Low to medium vintage output, great cleans & a singing overdrive tone.

Re: weapon of choice? hot or medium or low output pups?

On H-H guitars:

Medium (9.5-12k) to hot (14k+) on bridge, depending on the natural tone and volume of the wood.
Low (7.0-7.7k) on neck

On S-S-S guitars:

Bridge: Medium (7.0-8.0k) to hottish (9k+)
Middle: Low (5.5 to 6.0k)
Neck: Medium (6.5-7.5k)

P90's and their derivatives (Phat Cat, etc.)

Bridge: HOT-HOT-HOT (11k+)
Neck: Low (7.0-7.8k)

Re: weapon of choice? hot or medium or low output pups?

On my Strats I like low outputs on the neck and bridge...real authentic vintage Strat tones. For the bridge something barely medium output to get a little kick. I have a Cool Rails which is just about right...it may even be a bit under-wound as well.

For the Les Pauls....low output. I've even found the 59' to be a little too much for me.

The Tele...hot bridge....preferably a Little 59'. Going with a humbucker there means it's almost difficult to get the whole "icepick in the ear" sound. For the neck...well...I never have found anything that's just perfect for me in a Tele neck. The Classic Stack is nice though...

Re: weapon of choice? hot or medium or low output pups?

i like different outputs for different applications. i think all the p'ups ive upgraded to have been medium to hot pickups. the lowest output p'up i use would probably have to be the classic stack for strat.

Hey, different strokes for different folks. It´s all good, just a matter of preference.

I prefer my "gain level" to be such that my Charvel starts feeding back after about 3 seconds unmuted without touching anything. That way, with the mids boosted, she just tears eyerything apart that decides to stand in her way. Me included ;) :D :headbang:

This man speaks the truth.

Medium, Antiquity Custom for single coil, C5 for buckin'. Best of both worlds.

Hi, what's an Antiquity Custom?

Re: weapon of choice? hot or medium or low output pups?

The problem is if we consider 8.5-12k medium...Seymour doesn't have many medium pickups. Most are in the low or high range. But, you can't always go by the resistance. Look at the C-5! It feels and sounds medium hot. Reminds me a lot of my 8.3k Burstbuvker Pro!

High output, you can allways turn your amps gain down but you cant turn your p/u's output up.

Why play a high output pup? Seriously, they aren't nearly as detailed with harmonics as pafs. I can get the most wicked demolishing Crunching Chunky tone with a sweet piddly paf at 7.6k in the bridge. Just get one with the most clarity and eq shape you like. THEN BOOST IT 25db WITH THE g0dd@mn SEYMOUR DUNCAN PICKUP BOOSTER!

Re: weapon of choice? hot or medium or low output pups?

Mhmm the pickup I had in the bridge of my Charvel model 4 was rated at 8.6K of DC resistance. I guess that's low output? Anyhoo it was a good pickup, I liked it. Sufficient for higher gain stuff.
Now with the FullShred it's an entirely different story though. It distorts cleans and is WAY more sensitive. Since I'm quite the beginner, I have to correct my muting techniques a lot. So I have to give up speed for accuracy, which isn't a bad thing. It's just very different. The pickup is also much more bassy but I don't think that has to be the output that does it mostly.
I think I'd say medium. The FullShred is 'only' about 14K right? That's medium or high? I don't really know what would be considered high though. Over 17K?
I'd have to try more pickups I think.
