Weber amp kits?

Been looking over all the amp kits that are available & it looks like the ones made by Weber are the cheapest. Judging by a google/youtube search, it seems like everyone builds the 5E3 tweed deluxe kits. Not my bag. I did find one demo of the Princeton kit, which is what I'm interested in. Sounded good.

Anyone here build a Weber kit? What model? How was the quality of the components?

FYI, I'd just be getting the chassis/components...no tubes or speakers or cabs.

Thanks.

Re: Weber amp kits?

I built a Plexi kit. It was pretty good quality, but the power supply board was very tight, and a bit difficult to fit. They're good for the price, and they sound great.

Re: Weber amp kits?

I've done three kits. SJII, Java, and 8CM100. All sounded great. I had issues with space in the Java and the SJII. Also lost a few transformers. The quality of some components are pretty low. The sealed pots they offer work really well, but I've had a few regular pots not work at all. The resistors are fine and the capacitors do sound good. I've used their caps in a number of repairs and I've always been pleased. The switches for output impedance could be better. But if you're just getting started they are a good place to start. The cabs are a good deal and the chassis work well. If you want a high end amp then I'd look elsewhere. Mojotone has some of the best kits but they are expensive. And I don't know about your abilities, but if it's a first build I don't think I'd recommend a blackface style amp. A 5E3 is a great place to start. Or the 5F6, pretty much a JTM45 with 6L6's. The best part about Weber is the forum. The people are great and full of knowledge. Good luck and ask a lot of questions.

I've also been looking at triode amp kits. No first-hand experience but they also look pretty good and reasonably priced...

Re: Weber amp kits?

Another good non-tweed recommendation would be the Mojo JTM45. Good parts , especially good Heyboer iron. Cabinet ship is top notch.

Re: Weber amp kits?

The triode pricing is kind of shady...they do not include a chassis with the kit. Still, with the added chassis, a reasonably priced kit.

I'd love to have a JTM45 type amp, but it's not really practical for me. My "50 watt" Traynor is louder than I'll ever need. I'm really looking in the 10-15 watt range to drive a 2x10 cab. Something I can build small & rather lightweight. I'm digging the princeton circuit.

Re: Weber amp kits?

With a 2x10 cab a Princeton Reverb can still be too much volume for some situations.

As for Weber Kits, no offence intended but most of the ones I've looked at are pretty cheep...lots of junky parts, really low buck iron...

Good kits if you are on a tight budget or don't want much but unless you do a lot of upgrades to them or order a lot of upgraded parts i'd pass on a Weber kit.

If I were gonna buy a Princeton Kit right now I'd likely go with Marsh or Mojo...same kit for the most part and much better quality stuff than the Weber IMHO.

The amp in my avatar is a Triode Champ. I have had it a few years now and still love it. All top quality components. They also used the Classic Tone transformers which are really nice.
