Weber Recone review

I've been looking at getting new speakers for a quite a while being unhappy with mind. As Christian can tell you my decision on speakers over the last few months has been agonizingly slow and ponderous....however after tons and tons of reading I settled on G12-65s or V30s. I listened and look and listened and looked. Then I started pricing G12-65s and WOW! They go for some pretty good money, and after researching I found out why. They are supposed to sound very close to a greenback, but hold together better under gain. So 65s it was.

The speakers I was trying to sell to fund the project aren't really desirable, G12-80s. So I sent in my old G12-80s to Weber about a month ago for a recone as G12-65s. Now the 80s had a heavy magnet like an H30 or V30 or Classic Lead, so they weren't going to be exactly the same.

I added another twist by specifying that 2 speakers have the standard (75Hz) cones and two have the bass (55Hz) cones.

Finally I had Weber do the "Pre-Rola Treatment" which consisted of doping in some special way and breaking it in.

Last weekend they came in and I got them installed last Monday. I must say the difference is amazing. The "it" that I felt my tone was missing I finally have. The chewy mids that the 80s seemed to completely neglect, and the natural sounding highs are all there. The mix of bass and treble cones makes for a real nice balance of thump and snap.

These speakers have so much more texture than the previous ones had it blows my mind.

All that and no cone cry! :approve:

So I'm highly recommending Ted Weber's reconing services! :bigthumb:

Ha! I own exactly two Celestion speakers. A G12-H80 and a G12-65. I think it got the 65 for about 20 bucks, because it had a tiny tear in the cone, which I patched in about 10 minutes using Ted Weber's instructions.

I have the G12-H80 in my 18 Watter combo right now. So, you think the 65 would be an improvement?

If you want more texture and less fidelity. To me an 80 sounds more like a REAL bass speaker or PA speaker.

Hmmmm... and the G12-65 would make the amp 2 1/2 pounds lighter.

Yeah, it's a Marshall 1982 (bass model) 4x12 slant. In fact it still has the badge on the back that says 120 watts because they never made a new one for the G12-80s.

I'm sure they could. Unless you got the bass cone option on some or all of them they would be exactly the same since the G12-65 and G12-75T share the same magnet. Another thing to remember is that in the old days Celestion made G12M (greenbacks) and G12H30s with 75Hz and 55Hz cones. So in theory with the basket and magnet you have you could have:

G12-75 (obviously)
G12M (Weber 1225)
G12M-55 (like a Scumback M55)
G12-65 (Weber 1265)
G12-70 (Weber 12M)

The other thing to know about cones is that the heavier 55Hz cone loses 1dB of efficiency. A good thing in my book though.

Celestion's site says the 75s are supposed to be the ultimate high power greenbacks.....I just don't hear it though. On 75s the mids aren't textured

Something I forgot to mention; all of mine have the same G12-65 screen dustcap, for diffusion of highs.

It wouldn't hurt anything to try. The 65s sound more British I think.

From everything I've heard/read the speakers I ended up with are essentially Reinhardt's special design speakers.

Ok, here is my dillema, what I hate about my speakers, is the scooped mids, ice-picky highs, and flobby bass. I play heavy power metal, with some neo-classical elements, I am looking for those violin mids in the neck pick up position, the smooth rolled off highs with humbacker in the bridge, and a tight, defined, bass on palm mutes with out loosing any brightness, I also use Weber's MassLite to tame my Laney monster and I love it. I've described this before on this site and people have recomended me V30s or the X pattern of V30s and G12-75Ts since I do want brightness and screaming pick harmonics. Now do you think that weber can recone my G12-75Ts cheaper than a switch to V30s or X pattern with V30(buying only two of them.)would be? Thanks man.

Weber recones are 50 dollars a speaker plus shipping. I opted for the pre-Rola treatment which is an extra 5 bucks a speaker.

I would say consider 65s, or V30s. The 65s are more textured thna V30s IMO. More of a chewy kind of sound. Consider eating a chewy chocolate cookie or a chocolate cake. Both are chocolate but the cake is more airy and the cookie more chewy. That's the best analogy I can give you off the top of my head.
