Weber Speaker for Blues Jr.

Which Weber speaker do people recommend for the Blues Jr. What does it do to the amp sound? Warm it up? Sparkle the high's? Help!

Re: Weber Speaker for Blues Jr.

more british feel to the amp, a bit brighter, more complex midrange, probably more agressive when it comes to attack when it is overdriven, not as boring and bland compared to the stock speaker. Definitely a good choice, but definitely a totally different sound. Richer, sparkling cleans too with that alnico magnet in there.

Email Ted Weber He'll give you excellent advice. No one knows his speakers like he does. I trust him in these matters.

You're gonna have to update us if you put it in. I'm thinking of doing the same thing with my Blues Jr + new tubes to get a different sound instead of blowing like $800 on a new amp that might not be needed.

I too have been debating on changing the speaker, but I might not now after doing a couple of the BillM mods on mine. All ive done so far is the "stiffening" up of the power supply: http://home.comcast.net./~machrone/bjr/bjgunther.htm, the one wire mod from blue guitar: http://home.comcast.net./~machrone/bjr/bjothermods.htm, and the twin stack which is the easiest mod ever if you can operate a screwdriver and a soldering iron: http://machrone.home.comcast.net/bjr/twinstack.htm

it helped a lot with the hum, and definately opened up the tone a whole lot, Im waiting on the parts I ordered to get a couple others done, and will post how they sounded.

Re: Weber Speaker for Blues Jr.

I've had a ceramic Blue Dog in my Blues Jr. for several years and like it a lot. Best bang for the buck ever in terms of tone improvement. Most important thing it did was improve clarity, especially with bass frequencies (original speaker farted out easily). Also better chime and more bell like tone to treble notes.

The sound is slightly "British" (if I understand what that means). If you want super-clean sound, the California might be the model for you. Talk to Ted (or his son) and they'll steer you right.

As far as power tubes go, I know "everyone" seems to like JJ's. They're fine, but I got a set of Ei EL-84's from Doug's Tubes and like them better. The breakup seems a little smoother and they seem a bit warmer in the upper mids (not warmer in the sense of less treble/more bass). YMMV.

DO NOT GET Ei 12AX7'S! Mine sounded awesome for about 20 minutes, then went microphonic. They've got a bad rep for this AFAIK.

For preamp tubes, you might want to search here and in the Archives. JJ's are really popular. Tung Sols and Shuguangs are also worth checking out.

The V1 spot makes the biggest difference. Only 1/2 of V2 is used in the Blues Jr. V3 is the phase inverter and doesn't have as much affect on tone.

Hope this helps.

Re: Weber Speaker for Blues Jr.

If it was me, I'd decide if you're looking for an american or brittish tone. Once you've got that nailed down, then you'll be able to choose more carefully.

I had a DRRI many moons ago. I dropped a Weber Chicago 12 into it. I thought it was pretty good at the time. Now with what I know, I'd have gone with something different, probably an Eminnece Texas Heat or a Cannabis Rex or a 12A125A (which is what we put in the Caitlin recently and it's as good a vintage Jensen type speaker as I've ever tried).

But I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that nothing goes better with a BJ than some cannabis. All kidding aside, I'd put one of those into any blackface style fender with loads of confidence. It'll be the stock offering on my Brenna 40.

What do the Cannabis and Texas Heat do? Then Jensen 12A125A?

Thanks
