Hey all. :)

I recently tried the JB in the neck of my Carvin, and while I didn't like the full on humbucker sound, the split sound s spectacular.

It's thick and chewey, but still has a lot of bite and twang. It also matches up very well with the CC outputwise.

This got me thinking: Wouldn't it be a cool idea for Duncan to make a JB single coil?

Take the screw side of the pickup, put it on a baseplate, and use an alnico V bottom loaded magnet. Market it as a hot strat set or as dedicated mid and neck pickups for strats with hot humbuckers at the bridge.

What do you guys think?

Re: Weird Pickup Idea.

Fralin makes pickups sort of like that. #43 wire with adjustable poles and a bar mag on the bottom.

Re: Weird Pickup Idea.

Funny you should mention the JB. The Distortion is the same coil, but with a ceramic mag. Its also a pup that I run split, more than full on. Its a "single-coil tone", but not exactly like a single-coil.

If you made it a single, but retained the bar mag underneath, I wonder if it would still sound the same? Hmmm . . .

Artie

Edit: What I meant by that is, if you used a bar magnet, it would need to be "offset" in order to retain the same physical orientation as the humbucker. If you centered it, or used slug mags, it could alter the sound. Maybe. ;)

Slug mags definately won't work. It would make the pickup brighter and glassier.

I was thinking more along the lines of the old P90's; A pair of bar magnets, one on each side of the polepieces. Do you think that would work?
