Weird SD Pickups Black and cream zebras, anyone know what they REALLY are?

Re: Weird SD Pickups Black and cream zebras, anyone know what they REALLY are?

Those are counterfeits!

I recently saw the new generation of counterfeit DiMarzios that are coming out with accurate baseplates and markings...now these. Ugh!

Report them to SD and stay away!

They sure are glossy.
One base plate has 3 holes per side
Font looks all wrong

D*mn...they've gotten pretty good. Here are a bunch of counterfeits on AliExpress, some very "real" looking (especially with the baseplate stamp): LINK

Yeah, there are a few dead giveaways...plastic used for the bobbins, font/logo, screws, the fact that the neck has rounded edges on its mounting tabs.

My job used to be spotting counterfeit electronic components, so I notice the details

Look at these knock-offs...package and all! The average consumer would probably never know the difference!

Perhaps that explains the incredibly noisy Pearly Gates I installed in a Les Paul copy....

Re: Weird SD Pickups Black and cream zebras, anyone know what they REALLY are?

Well, so far they can't get the mounting legs right...so that's one way to tell at a glance

Plus it has holes punched in the baseplate for double fillister or double hex, which only the Full Shred or Double Screw JBJ/Holdsworth Metal Fatigue have as far as I know...Well the Alpha/Omega too but those are black baseplates.

Re: Weird SD Pickups Black and cream zebras, anyone know what they REALLY are?

Well, the double-holed baseplate has been used occasionally in the production of non-double-adjustable models since the '80s (presumably when the standard baseplate stocks were low), but, yes, this baseplate would be rather odd to find on a newer Duncan without double-adjustable rows.

Interestingly, I just realized that the ends of the screw poles on the versions I posted are tapered. I actually recognize these...GuitarMadness has their "Hot Platinum" model wound by the same factory. Same baseplate, poles, etc...

Re: Weird SD Pickups Black and cream zebras, anyone know what they REALLY are?

Right on man thanks, well we both can agree that they're getting crafty.

I guess best rule of thumb is to not buy from Korea or China for SD products.

Edit: Also there doesn't seem to be a lot of excess wax or any traces of it for that matter, so no wonder they're noisy.

Re: Weird SD Pickups Black and cream zebras, anyone know what they REALLY are?

That's why I shy away from s/h SDs or Dimarzios. Too risky (unless you're an expert).
OK for Lollar, Kinman, Fralin, Fishman, Lace, etc. though. At least for now.

The eBay ad show the item as shipping from Hong Kong.

I'm more baffled by these

What's the idea here????

Re: Weird SD Pickups Black and cream zebras, anyone know what they REALLY are?

T
Yes but Seymour Duncan 57 sets do not come with one pickup with 1 per side and the other with 3 per side.
The Seymour Duncan 57 set simply does NOT exist.
