Re: Weird Strat question

1.Check your action
2. Your pickups may be to high causing "stratitis" Thats when the magnets attract the strings and cause false tones

Most strats play well with medium action ( not too low not too high ) and with the pickups on the bass side lower than the treble side

Read my post regarding this..."Stratitis" Single coil magnet strength pulls the strings out of tune..Worse on the neck position...

Re: Weird Strat question

lowering pickups didn't help at all. i assume it was my fretting hand. i tried playing the chord differently and it helped..however, my stock neck pup sounds more in tune than my JB..both the neck single and JB are set low...i should intonate it again and see if that makes any difference..

You have to get the mag pull under control before even futzing with the intonation, you'll just find yourself coming back to do it over again ...

Re: Weird Strat question

maybe what im hearing is not out of tune, but maybe WIMPY..im guessing that has to do with my crappy amp.

Re: Weird Strat question

A common problem on strats is "fret slap". The higher you play on the neck the more likley it will occur. Some of the advise above is very sound. Raise your action, lowering PUPS etc. all could be a contributing factor. What I have done to eliminate this is to put a shim in the neck pocket. Put the shim "ONLY" under the top two screws. This leans the neck forward slightly and allows the string to ring free above the fretted position. Try it It Works great!!!! How thick of a shim will just depend on how bad the problem is I have used 2 pieces of paper at the light side to a piece of cardboard on the heavy side.

Re: Weird Strat question

ok, action is good, pups are low, changed my chording style a bit, intonated it again, problem solved.

Which two screws would that be, the two closest the bridge or the two closest the headstock? Thanks.

Re: Weird Strat question

One nice ruile of thumb is to check your neck pup when using a tuner. If it oscillates up and down, you've got your pup too close IMO.

Also, it sure sounds to me like maybe your neck relief might be out of whack and you're upper regsitry is just fretting out.
