Weird things I'm GAS'ing for

JB_From_Hell

Jomo's Nimions
A 12-string electric, but I want it for playing slide, not chimey rhythm.

12-string acoustic. Basically for the same reason above. I'd tune both down to C# like Jimi on "Hear My Train A Comin."

Thinline Tele. Never really been into them, but that H-S-H that Jonny Lang plays is super cool.

An easy plug & play laptop/headphones rig. Not really weird, but I still want one.

7 string archtop. A guy I know on Facebook has one, and while I've had plenty of 7 strings, I've never done the high A.

Re: Weird things I'm GAS'ing for

Was playing my twelve string acoustic last night; really dislike messing with tuning other than standard for any guitar, even if it makes a bit of sense with the extra tension etc. They're fun.

Speaking of Thinlines- I think most hollow guitars with F-holes are ugly, but I def. want some sort of Slash-hole Rickenbacker at some point, so might as well make that my twelve string electric :) More realistically I'd love to wind up with a twelve string Strat/Squier Venus with the Electric XII bridge; only Leo would invent a twelve string guitar bridge with individual string intonation & a string-through with termination points in a sustain block:

Never was compelled to attempt greater than six strings (or- greater than six courses of strings.) And can't imagine pickup up a slide; never really interested in listening to any music that uses one. Guess I want to say I mastered six strings in standard tuning before I move much toward anything else :D

Thinlines aren't weird, man. A '91 MIJ '69RI loaded with Zhangbucker Paul Bunyans was my main guitar for everything from pop to rock to alternative, 90's style stuff for well over a year.

Re: Weird things I'm GAS'ing for

I'm gassing for a block of flamed ash. yes that is a thing :D I have a quilted mahogany top ready to go. A 17 piece neck with ebony, ziricote and dunnowhatI'mgonnaputin is in the works too. Fluence Classics in gold, gold hardware, F-holes and a mottled ebony fretboard. So yeah. I'm gonna blow out all the stops on this one.

Re: Weird things I'm GAS'ing for

A semihollow Tele like a G&L Bluesboy is definitely on my list.

Also, I'm dying for a decent Strat. Something like a high-end Squier or a G&L Legacy would be perfect. Nothing too fancy.

Having sold my Les Paul out of necessity, my 339 is filling that spot but there's something raunchy and dirty about a LP than my 339 just won't do. So I think there's another Epi LP PlusTop Pro in my future.

Re: Weird things I'm GAS'ing for

These days I'm in a place where GAS doesn't bother me much. I'm looking forward to finishing my Charvel Model 2 rebuild, and then I'd like to get my hands on an electric 12. That's pretty much it. Unlike the OP I'm definitely interested in chimey rhythm tones with a few Zeppelin-esque things on the side.

This particular GAS has been rather long-standing, so I've considered more than a couple options. First off, I can't get along with Rickenbackers and I don't want to spend that much. I love my ES-335 and I've thought about a Gibson ES-335-12 or an Epiphone Riviera, but they're more than I want to spend while not offering individual intonation of all 12 strings.

That leaves these four.

Reverend Airwave (~$1000): The difficulty here is the price; $900-1100 is a lot to spend on a guitar that I probably won't play all that much. Otherwise this one checks all of the boxes. I've played the Reverend P90s in other guitars and they're quite good, and I love the bass contour. Beyond the price, I'm unsure of how the 24 3/4" scale will affect chime and clarity. Reservations aside, of all of the guitars on this list I'd probably want to make the fewest changes to this one.

The rest of these are 25 1/2" scale, so no worries about chime; OTOH I hope string tension won't be too high in standard tuning with 10s.

Fender Strat XII (~$1000): The price is comparable to the Reverend, and this one would require some tweaking. I'm not sure if I'd want to go HSS, or maybe something like a Phat Cat in the bridge, but I definitely am not a huge fan of Strat bridge pickups. I likewise don't know if I'd want a bass contour or blend pot since there isn't a ton of room for a 4th pot. Another minus is that the heel-adjust truss rod can be a PITA in a state where it's 80 and humid in the summer but gets down to 20 below in the winter.

Schecter C/SH-12 (~$400): The word on TGP is that these are awesome with a set of Phat Cats which I happen to have in my parts bin. I'd also want to rewire the individual tones to a master tone & bass contour. This one seems like the best option in terms of price & tonal flexibility, but I'm a bit unsure about the pickup switch location; it just seems kinda weird on a Strat.

Yamaha Pacifica PAC-303-12 (~$300): The same ideas as the Fender for a lot less money. The biggest differences are a head-adjust truss rod and a smaller body and guard with only two pots instead of the usual three.

At the moment I've got bills to deal with before a new guitar so it's all academic. In the end I'll probably go with the Schecter since it just makes the most sense. Who knows, maybe something else cool will fall into my lap instead.

Re: Weird things I'm GAS'ing for

All I really want right now is a spare G&L F100 . I have one, but don't like only owning one of things I enjoy and intend to use.

My desire to own more guitars sort of tapered off, except as a home for my spare pickups.

Re: Weird things I'm GAS'ing for

All I want is a Script Phase 90 that has been fitted into a bright orange wah enclosure...

Speaking of Orange, I also want Orange to do a clone of the JCM 800 that's been modded to sound more like 70s Orange.

Re: Weird things I'm GAS'ing for

A SG Standard in Cherry, with 57 Classics and a black batwing guard. Just because.

Re: Weird things I'm GAS'ing for

Completely understand the GAS!

Are they prone to feedback at higher volume?

My Semi-Hollow Strat was not prone to Feedback...not a Tele but close enough to say I don't think the Semi-Hollow Tele would be different on the feedback.

I think feedback has a lot to do with body size in hollow/semi-hollows. I can't confirm it scientifically, but I've noticed a trend.

That’s easy to do

For the life of my I don’t understand why Orange amps are a big fad now. They were crap back in the 70s and they are still crap. Nasty sounding amps. And not in a good way.

Re: Weird things I'm GAS'ing for

A pair of UA 1176s and a pair of UA LA-2As.

Nothing to do with a guitar rig, but they help make your guitar recordings sound phenomenal. :naughty:

Re: Weird things I'm GAS'ing for

I remember jamming with an acquaintance that had just got a new Thinline when they first came out, it squealed like a pig throughout the jam. I don't know if the newer ones have that problem. I also remember that during that jam, he blew the speaker in an old Vox 1-15 bass amp he had borrowed from a friend, I was glad it wasn't me that did that.

Re: Weird things I'm GAS'ing for

I'm not gassing a bunch either. I've got a fair amount of pickups, so I would like to have a couple new homes to rotate them through. I want a 59' Les Paul Re-Issue at some point, but that is down the road a bit. I also want a Gold Top at some point, but it doesn't have to be a Re-Issue. A Standard, Traditional, Classic is fine. Weight and neck profile mean more.

I'd also like to have a Hardtail Charvel Pro Mod. I don't want to mess with a trem system, as I won't use it. I really want a white one with a dark board.

My main gas though is really for an amp head and a 2x12 cab. I need to invest in a keeper of a good amp. I have a Marshall DSL 40c, but it always leaves me wanting a bit of something. Not sure if it's the amp, the 1x12 speaker or what. I'm drawn to something like the Friedman Runt 50 or a Spawn Quick Rod 50. I want to spend about $2k or so on the setup, so the Friedman wins in the cost dept. You can get a good deal on a used Spawn, but they all seem to be 100W, which I have no need for. Splawn cabs are way cheaper than Friedman cabs, so I may have to mix and match, or go to Avatar or something. We'll see. That's my next purchase though, at some point.

I think after you find the guitars that work for you, it quenches GAS for a bunch of people. Not everyone though. Some are just driven to collect, whether it's high end or low end. Guitarists seem to need to go through a phase of trying out many guitars to find their comfort zone. Some get lucky and find the right guitar on the first try.

Not to my knowledge? Could even play some 80s metal on the bridge pup

I had an SS "Thinline" mexitele back in high school, think it was billed as a '69 reissue or something? Pretty decent guitar iirc
