Well, I Got Myself a Boogie

Re: Well, I Got Myself a Boogie

Nice score! Ive always loved the looks of those with the metal grill. I didnt realize they were also such good cabs til this thread.

Re: Well, I Got Myself a Boogie

I loved my old Boogie half back cabs! I wish they would bring them back, with the metal grill.

Me too, although I've already got two of the 4x12 versions. They are my favorite cab, bar none. Not always easy to find them with the original Black Shadow 90s and EV12Ls, though. Those speakers alone are more expensive than a metal grill cab with them mounted!

Re: Well, I Got Myself a Boogie

It might be the perfect cabinet for me. The only way to know would be to get another one (along with another Bassman) and run them in stereo... Christ that'd be the best rig a man could ask for.[/QUOTE]

HCD. I run my Bassman through a Marshall 4x10 and was thinjing of getting a 2x12 for my second amp, but then I wouldn't have a backup so I would need a third amp.LOL. Do you see where this is going?

Re: Well, I Got Myself a Boogie

That's a sweet score. I've always wondered what those vertical mixed cabs sounded like - seems like the perfect blend of frequencies.

Re: Well, I Got Myself a Boogie

I've wanted that exact cab ever since they came out. I love those things and never got the chance to get one. Never saw one pop up when I could afford it. Excellent score. And now I just plain have too many cabs, including the same drip edge Fender you have! I have a silver face drip edge Showman on top of it though...

Re: Well, I Got Myself a Boogie

Izzy used a Bassman through a Boogie cab for AFD....

Just saying.
Had the 4x12's on stage when I saw them live back in the day too.

I've owned the exact same cab for about 10 plus yrs. Would never part with it. Weighs about the same as a marshall 4x12 but those mags on the BS are huge! Ever want to tweak try a 8ohm Celestion greenback i nthe top. Gives 'em a tad more midrange. All in all as many have pointed out, one of the most underrated cabs out there. Good score!

Ever decide to sell, give me a shout! :14:

wait a minute, you want him to run 25 watt greenbacks with 200 watt EV12l's? Ive never heard of such an outlandish idea..

Re: Well, I Got Myself a Boogie

if you want more midrange, try a G12K-100. I just replaced my greenback with one, and it's instantly 1000x better.

Re: Well, I Got Myself a Boogie

The amps are usually a love/hate thing for people, but I do not see how anyone can argue the quality of their cabs. Great stuff. Congrats.

It's funny, I hear people say that Mesa amps are hard to dial in all the time, but I've never had an issue getting a good tone from one. I like some more than others, but they're all capable of producing great tones.

I miss my 1/2 back 4x12 all the time... it's been 15 years.

I just saw the other thread, the reason it's so heavy is the EV.

Best cabs ever if you ask me. It's a shame they don't make them anymore.

Yeah I looked up the weight of the EV and it weighs 20lbs. Made my back wince lol

I think Mesa builds some of the best cabs in the business, and the Halfback cabs are my favs. I read once that they actually got the idea from Duane Allman, who would cut out a section of the back in the top cabs of his Marshall stacks.

As you have discovered, they are great for clubs, where you might need a little bit of that extra dispersion from the open back, but with the ported bottom they have a lot of power and punch.

The "normal" configuration for these is the Mesa/Celestion Black Shadow C-90 on the top and the EVM in the ported bottom. I have one of the 412 HalfBacks like this, but my 212 has the C90 on top and the Eminence made MS-12 on the bottom. The MS-12 is kind of a JBL clone, and very good sounding speaker. I have also seen them with two C-90s, two EVMs, or two MS-12s, and one with Mesa's 50 watt Vintage Black Shadow and a C-90 in the bottom, though I'm not sure that one came from the factory like that.

I really came to appreciate the nature of the cab when I first tested it out. I played it for about 5 minutes plugged into both speakers, and then to sate my curiosity, I plugged into the top speaker and then the bottom speaker. The difference between the two was remarkable. I would love to get a few more of these and fill them with a bunch of different speakers for recording purposes.

I also have a 412 Halfback with all EVMs that weighs in at just under 70,000 pounds. (Not a typo!) Well, maybe I exaggerated a "little" bit...but it is a GLORIOUS sounding cab.

The new version of the 212 Halfback is the Vertical Recto 212. It comes with two Vintage 30 Celestions, a cloth grille, and is completely closed. It is still ported on the bottom, and I think the dimensions are the same.

Nice score.

Bill

It appears that Mesa still has another similar relative to my cabinet, the Road King 2x12.

Wow! That thing is pretty damn clean. I would love to have that with ANY of the Fender-Headed Mesas on top of it. Very hot.

Actually, since the earliest Boogies are direct descendants of Fenders, I guess it's very fitting to be stacking them up like that. :D

Yeah, and I even cleaned it up a bit. I spraypainted the grill with a hammertone black finish (the closest I could get to what's on there) to cover up all of the parts where the paint wore off. It's got a few marks but I love it. I own nothing in perfect condition.

And yeah, as a Fender man I've been drawn to Boogie ever since I started wanting to play the music certain Boogies do best. I'd love to get a Mark IIB head to go on top of that Mesa. That in stereo with my Fenders would demand the holy light of tone be shone down upon me.

Not to take away from the excitement of that Awesome Mesa Cab.....what was the cause of the noise you were having a few days back.?
Was it tubes.?

Indeed it was. I've not replaced the tubes in my amp for a long time, especially considering how much I use it and how hard I push it.

Lucky you found a nice seller who allowed you to buy it a week later... Looks even cleaner in your pics than the Clist ad...

I saw a local bluesman play a show once and he was using that cab, I think. KILLER blues tone.

I don't think he was getting too many offers on it. They're not in high demand, but they're rare enough that I wanted to get this one instead of waiting a few months for another one to pop up.

That's a sweet score. I've always wondered what those vertical mixed cabs sounded like - seems like the perfect blend of frequencies.

The guy I bought it from said that the main reason he bought it was so that he could test the unique attributes of the design. He said that he would be getting someone to make him a smaller version of this cab but with 10" speakers instead of 12". That sounds like the perfect combination of portability and tone.

Re: Well, I Got Myself a Boogie

Interesting, I put it up on a pedestal I guess. That's my life story, putting things the masses don't care about up on pedestals.

Re: Well, I Got Myself a Boogie

Finally got to open up my amp with this cab at band practice yesterday. Where has this cab been all of my life? My Fender cab is great, don't get me wrong. But comparing the two, it's almost like the Fender is a bass cabinet and the Mesa is a guitar cabinet.

The Fender sounds huge, probably because it is absolutely huge. I've not yet even found a 4x12 that is bigger than this 2x12. However, all of that mass translates into a huge guitar signal, which is great sometimes. But my bassist uses an 8x10 cab, so we've got more low end than we know what to do with. I think that's why this Mesa sounds so great in my band mix - it got rid of the excess lows while keeping them huge and adding a bit more punch. This cab is also extremely loud (again, that could be the lack of low end making the rest of the signal sound louder) so I don't have to push my amp as hard.

If you're planning to use this with your bassman, then whatever the price, it is worth it. Just buy it, and prepare to be very very disappointed with your fender cab. Disappointed like a dad catching his son watching BBW porn.

....not that the fender cab is bad. That Mesa cab is just that much better suited for use with a bassman (especially if you like fuzz).

Low_Fi2100 had it. I didn't think that this cab could be better than my Fender, but it is. Ugh, I hate playing something so good that it makes other gear seem less than satisfactory. Now I seriously seriously want another one. Two of these with two Bassman heads would be so ****.

Wait, **** is censored? I can't not be talking about titties.

Re: Well, I Got Myself a Boogie

Did I tell you I have another Parts Bassman waiting around.?
Not a DE though...:)

It would seem blasphemous but more than one poster at the Mesa Boogie board have mentioned it several times. Didn't notice he had EV's in it. Mine has the stock black shadows. They're super bassy but until I stumble across a good deal on a greenback I don't see myself trying it either.

I'm still puzzled why they don't reissue those cabs. Both my old Boogie heads looked flat out sexy on top of it. Not to mention the metal crowd I used to run with would almost laugh when they saw me sitting my "little 2x12" up. That is until they heard it.

No kidding. This thing is ****ing loud. You're lucky you don't have an EV, it makes this thing a ***** to cart around. It's 2.5 times the weight of an average speaker.

Re: Well, I Got Myself a Boogie

True story. I've got a Boogie 1x12 convertible with an EV and it's heavier than my G-flex and it's not really close. I remember the 4x12 actually required 2 people to get it into the van.

For the record, the halfback they make now isn't the same thing, it doesn't have the sealed half, it's just a vented full back. The part that's awesome about the halfbacks is you have the huge tight low end from the sealed half and the smoother more room filling open half. Put a Mark II or III on one like they were meant for and prepare to change shorts.

It's really, really dumb they don't make them anymore.
