Well I went to the local music store today...

...and I asked if they had any pickups that people didn't claim after having their pickups changed. The owner brought out a decent size box. Most of the name pickups were $20. No name pickups were $5! I thought about this after reading Seymour's FAQ, because I want to do some magnet swapping and make hybrids, but I don't want to screw up perfectly good pickups.

Anyway, I walked out of there with four pickups, one was a HB-102 Duncan Designed. Thirty dollars total cost! There was also an Invader in the box, but that is not my style of pickup. It might be worth it for some of us to go "dumpster diving" if you will, to find some cool pickups cheap!

Sorry if this rambled:laugh2:

Great idea! Probably too much of a hassle for them to list them on Ebay.

Great idea & great tip......I need to go to GC tomorrow for a few patch cords & I'll definitely try it out:bigthumb:

It is a great idea -- especially the $5 models because I could make some new pickups to sell pretty quick and easy that way.

Is there a guitar tech at your GC? They don't have one here, they send the work out.

Send me one of the cheapies and I'll rewind it for you however you want it. I need the practice so no charge.

Yeah, I've gotten some practice in on humbuckers and they seem to be a touch easier than single coils -- not in terms of the actual winding but dealing with the leads and such. Tapped single coils can be a big pain that way. I just have to figure out a way to drill the second set of holes on the bottom for the tap in such a way that the wire doesn't cross over any of the other holes.

You can read about some of my humbucker winding adventures in my "Put an Alnico 8 in a 59 Last Night" or however I titled it.

Another thing I did was rewind the slug coil of my Jon Moore to see if I could get some more bite in it. Wound it fairly tight and very smooth and even -- very little scatter -- to complement the sweetness of Jon's screw coil.

The screw coil is 6.7k and Jon's pickups seem to have a fair amount of scatter in them so they're pretty sweet but I decided I wanted a little extra bite in it so I did the above rewind on the slug coil to 4.1k (was 4.5k originally).

Wow did it ever work! Great combo of sweet and bite, Jimmy Page honk with a treble mean streak. If anything, next time I'll back it off just a touch, but I was going for the extreme just as an object lesson, so the next one will be even better.

Yes I did -- you have one you want rewound? (I don't have any 'bucker parts yet so I can't make 'em from scratch yet.)

EDIT: Scratch that, just placed an order for some 'bucker parts. Rewind of an existing humbucker is free but one made from these parts not. If interested, PM me for details...

Yup....he's there every day for a few hours.

I don't go there often, but he's always there when I go. I talked to him a few times & he seemed like a very cool guy.

I'll let ya' know.

Yeah the Duncan Designed was $15. It was a perfectly good pickup that came stock in a guitar, but there was a flaw in the gold cover. I think that is why he gave it to me for $15. Plus, I'm an old customer there. They know me by name I've been shopping there for so long. Prices are high there, but they're willing to deal!
