Well if this don't beat all....

Let it B
I was starting to pack up the Ibanez that I had some issues with, to send back to SamAsh.com. I had bought a Jackson DK2 @ Guitar Center to replace it.

I was also prepared to take my Valvetronix back tomorrow to Guitar Center as I'd also had some difficulty getting the sounds I wanted out of the Marshall models.

I decided to play the Ibanez one last time...Well the dead notes were still there, but the action just felt SOOOO low compared to the Jackson. And I had raised it quite a bit already trying to elimate most of the buzz and dead notes. So I raised it some more until there were no more dead notes.. I thought it would be way too high...but after the adjustment it was still quite a bit lower than the Jackson, and played phenomenally. And no dead notes...at all....Hmm...

So I plugged in.

WHAM. Missing high frequencies galore (the pickups are brighter in the Ibanez). The Marshall models now sounded exactly like what I thought they should and pretty close to my 1987 RI. The vox now had that high end "sparkle". And the Soldano sounded much better too, as did the Boogie... And the cleans, and the dumble...And I was ripping all over the neck (for my abilities at least), and everything was right..the sound...the playability..I was in the zone.

So my dilemma:

Keep the Ibanez which plays better for me, and has a much better trem..and just change to some better sounding similarly bright pickups....and also keep the Vox....

OR

Keep the Jackson which will need new pickups as well (in order to keep the Vox), that doesn't quite play as well for me, and has a trem that doesn't stay in tune that well.

OR

Keep the Jackson, keep the DD pickups, and just get a new amp with more tonal control over the high frequencies...

Kind of a no-brainer I guess....

Amazing how different things just do and do not go together well in the realm of guitardom. I'm going back downstairs to play some more. This may be a long night...and I think the Jackson may be going back to GC, not the Vox.

Keep the Ibanez. There's too many Ibanez haters on here, and I feel lonely sometimes :laugh2:

I've noticed that around here. I've always liked them in the general sense

Feel lonely no more! :D I played the Ibanez for another 4 hours last night ...just couldn't stop playing.

I was able to dial in some really great sounds on the Vox's UK Modern (Mode four? TSL? 900?)Channel, and UK 80s (JCM800) channel. What a difference.

I'm almost scared now to change the stock pickups at all, because they sound so good through this amp. But I think a Duncan Distortion in the bridge, and a Full shred in the neck (still unsure of what single coil) would also do the trick. The powersounds were nasally and very bright through my 1987RI, but through the Vox they have a totally different character. Wierd...

Re: Well if this don't beat all....

hey, i just reinstated my ibie into action also. it's a GRX40 (cheapy fat strat copy), but hey it plays ok and it sounds better than my esp for jazz. I also put the Duncan designed HB102b (jb copy) out of my esp into that ibie and put a real jb in the esp. i love my ibie and it was my first guitar ever.

Me too! I'm an addict of the Ibanez+DiMarzio combo.

Keep the Ibanez! It comes down to which plays easier, and if that's the Ibanez, you hang on to that sucker, otherwise you'll always be wanting more. It's easier to change tone than to change feel.

Re: Well if this don't beat all....

Perhaps we should start a Ibanez Love thread? :D

Yeah. Def keepin the Ibanez. Overall I prefer the neck and feel, and I checked everywhere last night and had no dead spots after raising the action some more. Plus the ZR trem is worlds away better than the Jackson FR copy.I still like the Jackson alot it has it's advantages, and I really wish I could keep both..but then I'd be looking for a new place to live :D

I still am amazed at the sounds I was getting last night...The Jackson sounded better through my 1987 RI, but sounds muddy through the Vox, and The Ibanez was too bright through the RI and perfect through the Vox. The lead and rhythm tones of the Ibanez/Vox set on UK modern are just excellent..it really sings...good harmonics, good sustain, good crunch for chord work..very "Brown-Sound". I even got a really authentic sounding steve vai tone out of it by fooling with the tone controls. The 70's UK model though is still not very good IMO.

I'm just afraid now to switch pickups...heresy, I know on these boards :D
