Went amp hunting today!!

Bullet Proof Toneologist
the new beast!!!

Got me a 62 Gibson Mercury 1/2 stack all original 9 out of 10 condition for 280.00 incl tax. Has the original Jensen's in it as well. This amp just screams when you dime it. Fits right at home with the Plexi and friends and is one of the coolest looking amps I have ever seen. 280.00 bucks for a 1/2 stack?!!! I can't believe how good this thing sounds and it also has a killer trem with the original hardwired footswitch. Very happy day!!

Re: Went amp hunting today!!

I wanna see pics of that. I'm not sure if I remember what it looks like. Aren't old Gibson halfstacks really rare? They made a lot of combos, but you don't see halfstacks, almost ever. What tubes are in it, and what amp does it sound similar to?

My link above should get you to a pic http://www.classamp.com/gifs/GibsonMercurySmall.jpg it is all trapezoid style and rare as hell. I just saw a seller in Washington with one for 3000.00!!! Have no idea what the market bears on these, but they are gonna go way up in value as all old tube anything is. Terry Kilgore told me if I can find one jump on it because I wouldn't believe my ears. It is 6L6 and 12Au7 ( I am pretty sure) powered. I don't know what the trem circuit is driven by, have yet to yank the tube. Tonally, it has some definate Marshall character with a bit more snarl, that is a good reference point it surely has it's own flavor but it really is an aggressive gain. It has very tight response, lot of bite, and cleans up beautifully. It is intersting as you dial in the gain with the Bass knob, never seen an amp do that before you roll it back and it completely cleans up.
I spent about an hr putting it through its paces and I was freakin stunned that folks are not going gaga over these things. They are the real deal.

You freaking scored man! Pawn shop or music shop?
I am just pumped, this thing is spectacular tonally and is the most unique piece of equipment I have seen. To get a 40 yr old combo with no tears, hacks, anything for 280.00 is absurd. I have to think the days of these deals are gonna pass soon.

I got it at a dealer, that has a nice collection of older stuff that is very well priced. But this one is almost too good to be true.

what dealer pray tell? Willies'?

No, I checked Willie's last week, they charge too much, but have tons of drool worthy toys. They also have become much more of a boutique amp dealer, they used to have wall to wall Marshall's and the like and now they seem to just want the cork sniffers. If you want the goods and some change left over Twin Town Guitars and Encore Music are the places to go. Twin Town has lots of cool old amps and they are extremely fair in their prices. I tend to hit those places before hitting Willie's.

Re: Went amp hunting today!!

What a great looking amp! Strap on my black Strat with a satin suit standing in front of and plugged into that amp and cabinet. Jam up, and jelly tight!
What a sweet deal, man.
I gotta start hitting up a few pawn shops around these parts once in awhile and see if I can score a few goodies like that. Who knows?

The problem around here is all the pawn shop losers check sh*t on "Fleabay" & base their prices around that...definite hit or miss!

BEAUTIFUL AMP BTW !!! :)

The style points of this amp, are off the charts. The trapezoid cab just makes you smile. Get em while they are cheap, these are very rare and folks are starting to yak a bit about them.

Thanks for the tips, kevlar. I've always meant to go to these places, but have never made the trip. Sounds like now is the time!

Man that thing is sweet...congrats.
Have heard a few Gibber combos, they all sounded great and had a great overdrive when cranked.
Clips?? :laugh2:

Hopefully soon I can throw something up. This thing reminds me a great deal
of Houses/Physical era Zepp. It also nails the Doobie China Grove vibe.

You won't be disappointed, both places are filled to the gills with real cool stuff. Perhaps the best in the cities.
