Went from jumbo frets to mdeium jumbo frets

So every guitar I have ever owned has always had jumbo frets. I never really played around with medium jumbos.

I got a new guitar recently with medium jumbo's on it, and my fingers touch the fretboard on the guitar when I bend making it really akward to play. I never knew the frets varied in height I always thought they were only wider..

What do you guys do about this? Refret, new neck or just adapt ?

What he said. I own guitars with every size fret wire, once you put some time in you won't even notice them.
I have an Ibanez RG655 Prestige and when I pick it up it takes about 5 minutes of playing to get used to it because 97% of the time I have a Les Paul in my hands.

Allright good to know, just gotta put some more time in then. I was even worried my frets were to low I cant remember playing a sg or les paul that felt this low. Its a brand new fender tele.

Re: Went from jumbo frets to mdeium jumbo frets

Less tuning issues (by pressing notes sharp), but I think it's mostly up to your preference.

When you say jumbo and medium jumbo, do you know the Dunlop equivalents?

Re: Went from jumbo frets to mdeium jumbo frets

Get use to it. I have guitars with 4 different fret sizes, and I don't even think about it any more when I switch between them.

Re: Went from jumbo frets to mdeium jumbo frets

It's not that much of a difference, IMO. Preferably, I'd have all my guitars fretted with stainless jumbo, but medium jumbo or medium would be fine as well.

man.. my sg has super low frets.. like a wonder fretted guitar.. 30 years old and needs a fret job i guess or where they always low frets.. bought it in '91 and cant remember.. i wanna say they were always low.. kinda odd to play.. I prefer the DK-2 or stagemaster frets.. i.e. medium jumbo

Jumbo=6150, Medium Jumbo=6130, according to Warmoth

Re: Went from jumbo frets to mdeium jumbo frets

Huh? I could've sworn that 6150 was medium jumbo, 6100 was jumbo, and 6000 was super jumbo.
And you are correct. I too have guitars with a variety of fret sizes. I prefer the jumbo frets but I'm used to all of them. To me, fret board radius has bigger effect on feel. I struggle with vintage frets on 7.25" radius boards.

Re: Went from jumbo frets to mdeium jumbo frets

Was looking for other sites with descriptions to clear up my understanding, but most of them describe 6130 as Medium Jumbo, and one lists 6100 6105 as jumbo 6110 as tall-wide and 6150 as a classic jumbo that falls inbetween 6130 and 6100. The more I look into it the more confused I get

Re: Went from jumbo frets to mdeium jumbo frets

Guitar producers just call it what they want, basically. That's why it's difficult to talk about "medium jumbo" or whatever, because another person's medium jumbos might differ from yours.

Whats the pros of using lower frets?

First, if we're talking about more traditional-style guitars (Fender, Gibson etc.), that's just how they'd been in the first place. Many (most?) players don't want those more modern big jumbos typically found on metal axes, just for conservative reasons.

I think both "full" and "medium" jumbos have their advantages. What I like about mediums:

I find it easier to do barre chords, but can't really tell you why.
The greater the distance between string and fretboard, the lower you can press them down, which slightly detunes the note, similar to a small bend. I don't mind about this a lot, because I don't press hard.
While there's more resistance to bending thanks to more fretboard contact, my bends seem to have more precision. Maybe because there's more feedback under my finger, compared to big jumbos that make my finger float over the fretboard.

Long story short, bigger frets are better for fast metal playing, while mediums feel better to me for rock, blues, etc.

Some people also say the big ones tend to create more fret buzz, don't know if that's true, because I don't see why there should be a difference if string height above the frets is the same. My Charvel/Jackson (big jumbos) do have more fret buzz than my Epiphone/Gibson (medium) at same string height above the frets, and my Framus with the flattest frets does the least, but that might just as well be build quality. The Framus' frets really are too low for my taste though.

Yes i notise its nice to play chords and stuff with it. But any fast playing and bending I have way more controll with the big jumbo frets.. Because its what im used to.

Guys, I doubt that you guys can regularly press too hard and sharpen the note. Microtonally maybe, but it's likely unnoticeable

Re: Went from jumbo frets to mdeium jumbo frets

I have an Ibby RG with jumbo frets... my others are mediums, which I'm more used to. I like both, but I sometimes found myself stopping too early when sliding up on the RG, almost as if the bigger frets killed my momentum because of their height. After a little concentration and repetition, though, the problem went away.

I agree that the lower frets are probably better for rock/blues and the jumbos for metal, but I also think it's good to be well-versed in playing as many fret sizes as you can. It'd be a shame to blow that killer solo just because you busted a string on the previous song, had to use your backup axe, and weren't used to the frets!

Re: Went from jumbo frets to mdeium jumbo frets

i got three axes varying from super low to jumbo, and though they feel different when i switch immediately, it doesn't stop me from switching them. however it did require some getting used to (i dont attribute this solely on fret size though. i think the neck-profiles/radius come into play as well)

on the pros of bigger frets, i find i get more grip on strings on boards with bigger frets helping bends and vibrato. also its a welcome advantage for legato playing (atleast for me).

for those low fretters, i find keeping the fretboard condition well hydrated/oiled of primary importance. if your fingers constantly make contact with the board and it is dry, then it is guaranteed to frustrate you with unwanted gripping which will surely get in the way of smooth playing.
