Went with a Power Engine 60 for a modeler

Been playing though a variety of amps and wanted to get a better quality sound. Have a bad back though, making tube amps generally problematic. My small Peavey classic 20 went bad, and I went to our family camp with my strat, GT-8, and no amp. I tried my setup through their Roland KC-300 keyboard amp, and wow, it sounded very good.

Came home and saw a PE60 on ebay and snagged it. This, to me, sounds even better than the KC-300! Amazing bass response. In my Bill Lawrence-equipped strat, I get great dynamics. I am stoked and heartily recommend it to anyone interested in getting good sounds out of their modeler.

One of the best clean amps I've ever heard has to be the keyboard amp at school that I used in jazz band. Yeah. They are nice.

Good luck with the PE-60...grab another one for stereo with your GT-8 :bigthumb:

I ran one with my Trademark 60 & also ran a PSA-1 thru it.....worked beautifully.

Great little package & a very good price, esp. used :beerchug:

Definately run your GT8 in stereo.

One of the tastiest preamp sims that I've come up with is a clean AC30 and a driven Matchless in stereo.

There's a guy selling one pretty cheap on The Gear Page.....maybe $180 shipped or something like that :bigthumb:

Thanks, guys. I like that idea of running them in stereo - a sweet advantage of the GT-8.

I'm really jazzed by the thing. I know Benjy loves his GT-8, and Puckboy is the Tech21 authority here on this forum - though recently a convert to tubes!

Cool! I was eyeing one of those for a while. I think I'd prefer the Crate Power Block though - a bit more versatile.

I've read about them. How transparent are they?

Don't know about the Crate, but the Power Engine 60 is pure, clean amplification. I picked one up used and run my TradeMark 10 through it - great versatile setup for less than $500 (as long as you can live without switching channels with a pedal).

Yes, That's why I bought the PE60!

They're a very impressive amp. If you want to use your modeller for all your tone and simply use the Power Block for volume, plug it into the effects return jacks. Very clean, transparent power with enough headroom for most gigs.

The most amazing thing though is how good it is as a stand-alone amp, especially considering it's 100% solid state. If for some reason your modeller crapped out, you'd have a very usable backup. I was surprised at how thick and juicy the gain sounded.

And since it's a head, you can use whatever cab you like. I tried it with an open back 2x12 and it sounded pretty huge. If you want to run it stereo, a pair of 1x12's or a stereo 4x12 would be sweet.

Yes, at GC once I ran a GT-8 through a Crate solid state amp, and I was impressed at how good it could truly sound.

Maybe I'll try one out someday. Thanks for the answer to my question!
