WGS ET65 vs. Celestion G12-65 vs. WGS ET90?

I had two 1978 Celestion G12-65 speakers in a 2x12 amp for years and years (and bands and bands). I really liked them. Then they just got too worn and stretched and started to flub out really bad every time I played a chunky E or A chord.

So...after emailing with Eminence I bought a Tonker. Sounded pretty good. Then I added a Tonkerlite to go back to two speakers without adding a ton of weight. (Seriously, that Tonkerlite is freaky how light it is!).

My sound now is "okay" but it just doesn't seem as full and warm as it did with the G12s. So I'm going to replace the Tonker. Is the current Celestion G12-65 as good as a vintage one? I'm under the impression it's made in China, but don't know where I saw that. I have more money to spend than I did 6 months ago so I don't mind spending the $165 for one speaker, BUT I'm very curious about the Warehouse Guitar Speakers' ET65 and especially the ET90. They are much cheaper and online reviews seem to be just as positive.

Anyone have experience with the WGS vs. new Celestion speakers?

Oh yeah, and one more to throw in the mix: Eminence Governor sounds warmer than the Tonker in their sound clips. Anyone have experience with both?

We compared an original G12-65 with an WGS ET65 recently. Warehouse Speakers did a really good job recreating the special blur of the G12-65. Maybe the original is a bit warmer, but this has to do with the age of the speaker.
The ET90 is tad bolder and brighter than the ET65 judging on the vids, like a more modern version.

I have never compared them directly but I will say I am a huge fan of the ET65. It is a really fine speaker that is gaining a lot of attention in various forums for all the good reasons.

If you still have the originals, and the voice coils are good, I'd consider getting them reconed.

The tonker lite probably doesn't have the warmth or bottom of the tonker which is itself a little different than the 65. I haven't tried the new celestions but I bet they are closer. The warehouse stuff I've tried has been fine but I basically stick to Webber, eminence, or celestion

Re: WGS ET65 vs. Celestion G12-65 vs. WGS ET90?

Holy hell, I got an et65 and that speaker is magical!
It does not sound just like my old g12-65 speakers did - it is snottier and not as crisp - but it basically cured everything that was wrong with my tone. My sound now is smoother and more full with much better sustain. MUCH better. I don't really understand how a speaker can make an amp sound like it has more gain, but this one does.
I'm going to replace the TonkerLite with either another et65 or a Veteran 30 as soon as possible. I know it will weigh more but sacrifices must be made. (And the et65 weighs less than the Tonker did so it almost evens out.)

Just wait until it breaks in, it'll sound even better. I'm sure two of them would sound great, but the Vet 30 does pair really well with the 65. I've been running that combo for almost three years now and it can cover just about everything and sound good.

Just put a ET-65 in my Marshall DSL40 very musical speaker:)

How long did it take to loosen up? have 5 hrs on mine 10 to 20?

IME, WGS take forever to break in. I pounded my green beret at high volume nearly everyday and It took a few months to lose the shrillies.

Ive got about 30 hours high volume on the H30 clone and it still isn't anywhere close to broken in.

My suggestion is a mp3 player.

Can you describe the difference in sound of the et65 vs the Veteran 30? The sound similar in clips and I'm on the fence over which way to go for the second speaker.

Re: WGS ET65 vs. Celestion G12-65 vs. WGS ET90?

The Vet 30 has more mids, they balance each other out. The WGS tone chart lists their B/M/T at 6/4/6 & 5/7/5 for the Et-65 and Vet 30 respectively and that's been fairly accurate in my observation.

Re: WGS ET65 vs. Celestion G12-65 vs. WGS ET90?

I loved the WGS ET65 then tried the celestion Lynchback.thats my favorite nice and sounds really good to me.

Re: WGS ET65 vs. Celestion G12-65 vs. WGS ET90?

Oh man, I just dropped a Veteran 30 in next to that ET65 and I am NOT digging it at all! I am reserving judgement until I give it more time to break in but out of the box I'm not feeling the love like I was for the et65. Keeping my mind and ears open.
Worst case, I still have the Tonker and the TonkerLite and I could could drop one of those back in.

Very different speakers. The Vet 30 is WGS take on the Vintage 30 but they went for subduing some of the ice pick mids. I have ET-90's and Vet 30's in a 4 x 12. Pretty versatile cabinet and I like it. But it's so subjective that my like could be your hate and we'd both have valid opinions.

Doesn't WGS give you a one time, 30 day speaker exchange for something else if you don't like the speaker? They did anyway. You can always check that option out if you decide it's not going to work for you.
