WGS Reaper vs Veteran30??

Im looking at doing some speaker shopping and swapping... Looking at WGS Veteran 30s and Green Berets and also Reapers... I know Vin 30, greenback combos are popular, so was thinking Vet30/green berets in an x on the 4x12.
I see the description of the Reapers, but anyone able to tell me how diff they sound than the reg Vet30s?

Would Reapers and Green berets be a good combo? Or would the Reapers out power em?

Thanks

Re: WGS Reaper vs Veteran30??

the reaper and the mojotone h30 are the same.speaker.

They don't sound much like an actual celestion. they are far clearer and trebley. The mids are smoother than the 70th anniversary h30, but not as rich/complex as the Heritage h30s. On my DSL I had to roll treble and presence pretty much off to keep from icepick killing me.

I matched the reaper/mojotone up with a green beret and the dB levels are similar so neither was overpowered like can happen with actual celestion 12m and 12H speakers.

I just cannot gel with WGS speakers...at least their take on classic celestions. I love that they are usa made and the company seems great, but I think they sound like ass and think eminence is the better option if.you need to save some dough. Other people love them....horses for courses..

Re: WGS Reaper vs Veteran30??

I have a British Lead in a ported 1-12 cab that I love. Can't speak to the Reapers or Veteran 30s though, I've never been a V30 fan. Looking at the resonant frequency of the speakers, it kinda backs up Jeff's experience, the Reaper has a pretty high res freq and the Vet 30 (and British Lead FWIW) have a much lower res freq.

I have to ask again, what are you hoping to gain from the speaker change from the G12Ts? How loud do you play? Also be aware that any new speaker will be a little harsh until it breaks in.

The Eminence Legend series are really good too and cheaper than their Patriot and Redcoat seires, sorry, don't mean to add to your option anxiety...

Re: WGS Reaper vs Veteran30??

The WGS ET65 with a Reaper or Veteran seems to be the favorite WGS combo.
I run the ET 90 in my Zinky Blue Velvet combo regularly with a Retro 30 that I have in my Blackstar 1/12. I have a loose Vet 30 but don't care for it so much as it's just SO dark and scooped. REALLY like the Retro 30/ET combo though.

Re: WGS Reaper vs Veteran30??

The WGS pairing I have is a Reaper HP and a Retro 30 in a 2X12 cab.
On the Retro 30 details, WGS states "For those who love to mix speakers, you should pair this with the Reaper™ or the ET65™."
I'm quite happy I did. This pairing is warmer/darker than the Celestion pairing I have (a Vintage 30 with a G12H55). Depends on the characteristic of the amp which pair is best suited. For a warm/dark amp, choose the Celestions; for brighter amps, I prefer the WGS pair. That's my take anyway.

BTW, the WGS seemed to take twice as long to break-in than the Celestions.

I don't mind checking out Emi's. I want to get what is going to work best. As far as how loud do I play? normally not very. very rarely get to play too much above bedroom volume. So, I know Im not pushing the speakers too hard either..

Re: WGS Reaper vs Veteran30??

I wish I could demo a WGS - it's like the clips (for the two you mentioned) sound good, but there's something weird going on in the mids/upper mids I'd like to hear in person.

Re: WGS Reaper vs Veteran30??

Yes, the toughest thing about speaker swapping is not being able to test before buying, unless you have a friend who has one.
It can end up an expensive quest!

They will allow a refund or trade for another speaker one time, if you buy direct. At least they did when I was dealing with them.

very cool!

one of them - I think their vintage 30 type thing (I guess that's the veteran) sounded very crunchy - I thought I'd dig that one

They make two V30ish variants...vet30 and retro30. Alot of folks like them, I have not used them.. but my thoughts are that if one removes the high midrange spike and chime that many complain about in the Celestion, you are also removing the very things that makes the v30 a great speaker to mic up and cut through a mix whether live or in a studio. I will agree it can get overwhelming/grating in the room, but it just seems counter productive to me.

That said, if it does the trick, have at it! :)
