Whaaaa-hoooo I created my own wiring problem!!!!

Yeah so I think am a complete retard . . . .

I just got done pulling the livewire out of my explorer. . . re-installed my stock pup.

I followed both guitarelectronics schematic as well as seymours schematic for standard 2 pups/2 vol/ 1 tone/ 3-way toggle.

I soldered them all together and I think I got wires perfectly in the right places. . . problem is that the sounds is so weak I have to turn my amp way up to hear it! Not right~

The volume level is extraordinarily low. Toggle works, tone works, volume works on both pups. It is working. . . .

I have tailpiece/bridge ground + both vol + tone grounds together onto back of vol#2 pot. I have sleeve ground running to back of the same pot.

Anyone want to guess what I did wrong?

What would cause the low volume problem?

I am a noob, so maybe I'm missing something??? :smack:

Re: Whaaaa-hoooo I created my own wiring problem!!!!

My guess is that you forgot the battery for the active pups... my $.02

Obviouisly didnt read the whole post.

Could be a dead pot or switch. Try wiring the pickup direct to the jack to make sure it's still working, and then wire in one component at a time, to find out exactly which one is the culprit.

Re: Whaaaa-hoooo I created my own wiring problem!!!!

It could also be a bad soldering point so check those too while you're at it

I did read the whole post. he didn't specify which pups he was having the problem with.

I'm going to bed now.

So...
were you having a problem with the Livewires sounding weak and reinstalled your stock pickup? or did you remove the Livewires, and now you're having a problem with your stock pickup sounding weak? please clarify. thx.

Usually, actives use a much lower value pot. What value do you have in it now? Although, LW's use a 100k, that shouldn't cause a dramatic loss of volume. But still, its worth checking.

Also, did you leave the stereo output jack in place? You may have ground connected to the "ring" lug instead of the "sleeve" lug.

Re: Whaaaa-hoooo I created my own wiring problem!!!!

He didn't state which Livewire. If he replaced a Metal Livewire with passives and used the 100k pots he would notice a significant loss of output as well as having some seriously dark tone.

Guess I need to get my crap together lol.

I yanked the livewire.

I am having trouble with the pup that I re-installed (the stock pup)

When I installed the livewire I used the provided livewire pots. .. . they are no longer here. . . .

What I have now is the original three pots and the two original pups that came with my explorer. . . I never pulled the neck pot or pup out, so they have always been there. I used it for reference.

Now problem is both pups have same low volume problem. . . . there is no detectable difference between the pups - volume-wise. The whole guitar is just really really quiet.

I suspect a poor solder joint somewhere since I am NOT a guitar tech yet.

I have no way of testing them or checking them ???? some sort of ohm meter or something??? I don't have one, only a solder gun I borrowed for the job.

Do I have to take it in to the shop so they can test it? OR does the low volume "point out" something specific???

Re: Whaaaa-hoooo I created my own wiring problem!!!!

OK I FIXED IT! ! ! !!

I plugged the guitar into the amp and volumes up toggle middle. . .

I started pulling and tugging on wires and re-soldering them . . . turns out the "middle" position wire coming from the toggle was not soldered very well. . . I re did it, and good as new!

I FIXED MY OWN WIRING PROBLEM WHAAAAA_HOOOOO!!!!:)
