Whaddya think of this?

Hey everyone-

New Duncan forum member here, not-so-new Duncan player. I've been kicking around the idea of putting a different set of pups (who here isnt?) in my PRS CE24. I've already gone from a Full Shred, to a JB, and finally a Custom in the bridge (coincidentally the Custom was my first Duncan pickup almost 10 years ago..)

I want to try and pair the Phat Cat in the neck along with the Custom in the bridge, but I'm wondering if the Custom is too hot. Anyone in here try that combo?

I currently have my electronics set up as 2 volume knobs and a 3-way, but my pots are garbage. When I roll down the neck pickup, I lose all the treble around halfway, and anything lower is almost too quiet and muddy to be usable. Will that be remedied by using the correct pot value? I'm assuming both pots should be 500k.

Thanks!

Re: Whaddya think of this?

the stock pups in the prs should be 500k anyway. using crappy pots is not the reason you lose the treble when you roll off the volume. you will likely get more joy from rolling of the volume if you do the 50s wiring mod. some of the other guys here can advise you better on the mods than i can.

as for pairing the phat cat and the custom...i think that should be pretty cool. i say go for it

Re: Whaddya think of this?

They're not stock pots actually. They're crappy pots I bought from Guitar Center when I was in a pinch and never got around to getting good ones. I am interested in the mod you're talking about though, if you could point me to it. Could you elaborate on why I'm losing the treble?

Re: Whaddya think of this?

I don't think hotness is so much the issue as general sound. Do you really want a P-90 neck and hot HB bridge?

Re: Whaddya think of this?

search the vault for 50s wiring mod and treble bleed mod...i know at least one of them addresses your issue. plenty of threads there detailing the mod, what it does, and what the problem originates from.

as for pairing the phat cat and the bucker...i dont think the phat cat really sounds like a p90, i think it sounds more like a bucker so i think it will be ok with the custom. def worth a shot if you can buy it at ur guitar center and return it if you dont like it

Re: Whaddya think of this?

Kind of, yeah. I dont use my neck pup too much right now, but thats just because I dont like the sound, and because of the problem with the volume knob. I've always liked the idea of a P90 / HB combination, but without routing theres no real way to just try it out. If it sucks I can always just get a Jazz :)

Found it, thanks. Looks like it's what I need, but I'm puzzled as to why i only notice the loss in treble with the neck pickup and not both. Hmm.

Re: Whaddya think of this?

could be the bridge volume is already wired 50's style, there is only one wire moved

two new 500k pots wired 50's style and the cat and custom should be fine volume wise. the cat in the neck will be pretty fat er... phat i guess, but the contrast might be really cool. i used a hot neck bucker with a phat cat in the bridge and its a cool combo even if it isnt orthodox

Re: Whaddya think of this?

Thanks for the info guys, I'm definately going to give it a try, and let you guys know how it goes...although I have a good feeling about it :)
