What 100 watt class for "pedal platform"?

I use Mesas and get my drive from preamp gain.

But I am curious about opinions for good amps for the other approach; basically, what is a good big bruiser of a tube amp that isn't a master-volume type, that is currently manufactured? Something that would run in a stack or half stack configuration. Maybe 6L6 based; that you put a fuzzbox or od in front of.

This is an academic question; I am very happy with my rig but I wonder what the go-to would be. I'm guessing a lot of people would say Fender; but I imagine something with a very tight, clean and punchy bottom end.

At one time I played (guitar) through an 80s era Marshall JCM-800 bass head and used distortion boxes. That was pretty cool (or would have been if I had a better distortion box).

I have a Sovtek MIG 50. It was apparently a somewhat a bastardized Bassman circuit, which takes pedals extremely well. I'm sure a Mig100 would do as well. I will likely be building myself a JCM800 clone eventually, which I think will do just fine also.

One of the other guys in my band runs a Bassman. It's great though sometimes it has a hard time keeping up with the rest of us, since it really starts to break up around 4 on the volume. What was the 100 watt version called, or was it also called a Bassman?

yeh, you can get silverface models in 100w and also 135w

I may be the odd one out, but I always thought the Artisan series from Blackstar would be perfect for this sorta thing. There just aren't enough reviews on them to say for sure.

Twins and Plexi/JCM Marshalls come to mind 1st but..

Why not the clean channel on a Mark Series Boogie? Its got a Master, but still it can be worked with.

FWIW I am learning to really love the cleans I get from both my Dual Recto (and the little Express I have, which I imagine as a small scale/much cheaper MK series.)

But it seems like all those knobs are going to waste....? :-p

Another guy in my band had an old 100W Plexi and I tried to use it, but it was so loud that it just slew everyone. It was pretty awesome though. It needs a good amp tech and a couple hundred in repairs anyway.

The Blackstar is interesting and I also have to wonder if anyone uses any Peavey gear this way (like a 6505 run clean)?

Does anyone have any experience with these? The pedigree seems to come by way of early Orange or Matamp. I am intrigued by them, I admit, because they look like something built from Korean war Army surplus parts (I mean that as a compliment).

A Peavey Penta would be a great choice, they are discontinued but you can still find them, there are a few on ebay right now for pretty reasonable prices.

I'm digging the crap out of my Marshall 2203X for a pedal platform right now! Loop is great. And of course it takes wah and OD pedals great up-front. My one-off custom Straub 6L6 is awesome for a blackface-type clean pedal platform as well.

My bass player has a Sun Coliseum he sometimes runs through a Yamaha 2x15 that is roughly the size of the monolith in 2001 A Space Odyssey and if he turns it up it will make you drop a pantload. I had a Sunn Beta Lead long ago and it was awesome. These Sunn amps will make you reconsider solid state for sure.

When I think great tone and pedals + tube amp, David Gilmour is my first point of reference. That means I also recommend the Hiwatt DR-103... :)

ya I HEAR ya! loud amps :)

tube sounds so much better than solid state to my ears. a fuzz pedal through solid state or digital or analog and NOT TUBE sounds absolutely horrible.

I have been using my character series tech 21 oxford pedal though for analog tone for recording, and it sounds good with my keeley modded rat pedal :headbang: not exactly like tube tho ;)

For guitars I agree I have always liked tube amps better. It seems like guys with solid state bass rigs can get pretty good sounds though. I guess it depends on the quality of the rig of course.

I have never heard of Tech 21 pedals, are they DSP based?
