What 15 to 30 watt Tube Amp for LP Blues?

Hi All!
I'm looking to buy a practice amp for my LPs. I want a tube amp that will match up with them for Blues the way my Blues Junior does with my Strats. I spent a lot of time building and matching my strats but time for exploration and research is really limited nowadays. Your opinions and experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Hello!

What is it about the LP Blues Jr you do not like? Mine seems fine with my LP and other bucker guitars for blues.

Vox tube amps are cool. However, 30w tube amps are way too loud to be considered "practice amps".

I do like the tone but Ive played through both a marshal and a Mesa Boogie and liked the sound better, but neither was a practice amp.

Yeah your prolly right, 30 amps might be a bit much. Never played on a vox though. Got a particular practice model you recomend?

The Crate V16 is about the same size as the Blues Jr, both in actual size and wattage, and has a very good Marshally/Voxy tone to it, more on the Marshall side though.

My Traynor YCV20 does the trick nicely. Bright chimey cleans and great gritty blues OD.

The bottom line is that for a "bedroom" amp you're just unlikely to find something unless it's very specialty. To get it cranked you really need to start looking at things that are around 1 to 4 watts.

As far as LP's not sounding good, I might suggest taking a look at that Blues Junior a little more closely. I use both Strats and LP's with mine and get some great sounds out of it. I found the Billm mods to be almost necessary for them though, especially the tone stack and presence mod. A speaker upgrade helps to open up the sound alot as well.

The other option for a bedroom amp, if you're not going to gig it out, would be something sold state or digital. Alot of folks go digital for bedroom amps simply for the convenience and desire to mess around and create new settings and try out new things.

You might just be into big amos fir your LP's? Or high gain amps? Because the Blues Jr and other small amps don't do the same tricks.

Vox AC15 is one of my favorite amps but it's a little big to be a practice amp.
There is the Epiphone line... Valve Jr. and I guess that those amps were designed to have good tone with LP's.

And here's another option- go pedal hunting, maybe you'll find a cheaper solution in the form of a pedal.

Orange Tiny Terror.

YUP, i am getting a Tiny Terror to run with my Blues Jr. - can not wait !!!

Other "practise" amps, in the 15watt range that i would like to own is the :

Ampeg J12R (15watter)
Laney VC15
Matamp Model T (15w combo)
Matamp Chino (15w combo)
Matamp Kingstreet (15w head)

IMHO, they all rock with a Les Paul :smokin:

Re: What 15 to 30 watt Tube Amp for LP Blues?

Yeah, I was going to recommend the Vox AC15. It's only 15 watts, but it still gets loud. Keep in mind, with my Epiphone Valve Jr. (5 watts tube) hooked up to my 4x10 cab, the whole house shakes. But part of the difference also lies in the speakers. The Vox AC15 has a single 12" speaker.

If you want something all tube and vintage, you'll love me when you get your Univox U45 or U45-B. To hear an example, click on my songs below and play the tune "That Kinda Man" to hear it with my Les Paul and no distortion pedals on the solos, just the amp all the way up. Never Die was also done strictly with the U45-B for everything using both strats and Pauls.

Gotta wait for one to pop up on ebay, but it's well worth the wait

Re: What 15 to 30 watt Tube Amp for LP Blues?

I just picked up a Crate Palamino V8 - works great with my Strats and my LP-class Yamaha! 5 watts, gain, tone, volume controls, and a 10" speaker for a little more bass thump... :smokin:

Re: What 15 to 30 watt Tube Amp for LP Blues?

Thanks for the input everyone! you've all given me a lot of homework to do! I've never heard an amp that was 5 watts or under either before. I'm one of those hard working stiffs who just does'nt get around enough so all this info is greatly appreciated. I'm definately a tube man and I'm not up on Blues Jr mods although I've heard they're pretty common. Got to look into your suggestions on that too.
75lespaul "That kinda man" really does rock and I definately liked the tones.
I actually saw a mesa boogie subway blues on Ebay the other day. I didn't see on in your gear Capo- what is your opinion of it?
Gotta check all your other stuff out fellas. Any more on low watt tube amps would be helpful too.

Thanks!

Re: What 15 to 30 watt Tube Amp for LP Blues?

I've got a blackface Champ and it rocks, but imo it sounds way better with my strats than the LP. That Univox sounds great with either. I had an Epiphone Valve Jr. head and once again, sounded awesome with the strat and okay with the LP. I've heard awesome things about the Crate Palomino using either, and well, a Mesa is a Mesa, lol. It will probably sound incredible.

Just FYI, the Univox U45 and U45-B go for anywhere between $100 to $150 on ebay (I got one for $125 and another for $150). I bring any older amp I buy to a tech for a workup, usually another hundred. There are plenty of other great Univox amps but for practice, I brought these up cuz I actually own them. Also got a 65 Vox student amp. On "That Kinda Man" I'm actually using my strat through the Champ, and my Les Paul through the Univox and the Vox for all the chording. That little blurb at the end is just the strat and Champ.

LET US KNOW WHAT YOU GET! :laugh2:
