What a difference a new pick makes..

I've normally played Pickboys, Dunlop nylons, and Dunlop 1.14 Tortex's, but I decided to give a Jazz III a try the other day.

I like it... after I got used to the tiny size. It's a "faster" pick, I guess. I seem a little more accurate during slow string skipping type arpeggios a la Hotel California. However, what surprised me was that it totally changed the clean tone.

I have an LP with Custom/A2PH that I run through the Twin Reverb model on my Line 6. Before the Jazz III, the tone was a pretty mellow "Jazzy" tone which I liked. After the Jazz III, the tone is a little spankier... with almost an acoustic quality to it. It has some jangle without the twang if that makes any sense. So, as a result I'm playing lots more through my "clean LP."

On top of that, I get a nice blended tone between the Custom and A2PH, which I never really explored before this. I roll the tone of the Custom down to about 3 or 4 which removes twang, but leaves some jangle. The A2PH tone is about 8 and the volumes are about 7.

So, for acousticy sounds, it's the Jazz III. For a mellower Jazzy tone, it's the Pickboy. For hard rock it's back to the Jazz III for quicker runs and a more touchy-feely kind of feel.

Any similar stories?

Re: What a difference a new pick makes..

my guitar teacher turned me onto jazz IIIs and i havnt looked back. same as with u: i got used to the tiny size, and i could play faster, smoother. i didnt notice the tone change u had, but i loved the feel and playability these pics have. and they are pretty thick, so they can handle anything i dish out, and they never really wear out. so im glad u r enjoyin um as much as i do. my only difference is: i use um for EVERYTHING!

I've been meaning to try them.

Maybe I should stop being so lazy.

I used to play those jazz III's, but whenever I would strum, or get really into it, there wasnt enough to hold onto, and you'd see picks and pieces of my fingernail flying everywhere.

Jazz III's are the only picks that should ever be made.
