We ALL know the movie, and if you don't, oh boy, you better run out and buy it right now !

So all you amp guru's.
What was the REAL amp that got used with the Tele ?
I am not referring to the amp behind him on the movie set, but the amp that was used for the recording studio to created that lust'full overdriven Tele tone ?

Does anyone know for sure what was used ?

Thanks to all

James

Re: What amp was used here ?

The slide stuff was Ry Cooder, IIRC and you could look up the gear he was using in the mid 80s.

The classical part was played by Mr. Vai and was probably a whole different rig.

Slide stuff sounds like an old tweed of some sort...at least to me.

Probably a cranked to "10" TWEED :cool2:

Anyone else ?
I am referring to the slide section of the tone, like Bill assumed i am asking about !
Probably the "best" Tele tone to have crossed my ears, but it sounds hell'ish (((LOUD))).

Re: What amp was used here ?

Well...everytime you see Ralph "play" in this movis it's really Ry Cooder except the part where he's "playing" the classical style stuff...

I don't know for sure, I do know that a lot of the guitar parts in the movie are really "produced" and have added compression, reverb and other such things that make it hard to really tell what might have been being used.

Also, Ry has a LOT of gear and uses it ALL!!!

I've seen Ry use several amps over the years including some Demeter stuff, a Gibson GA40, a Magnatone 280 and even a big Standel as well as blackface and tweed Fenders, effects include EVERYTHING between an older Eventides Harmonizer to a Dan Armstrong plug in compressor and his guitar collestion includes everything from hacked up 60's Strats with junk pickups stuffed into the, several MIJ Guyatone guitars from the 60's, Kay, Harmony and quite a few 40's and 50's Gibson hollowbody guitars...

I guess what Im getting at is there is likely no real way to tell...

Re: What amp was used here ?

NEW QUESTION :

What amp will get me in a very close ball-park, without killing my wallet ?

Re: What amp was used here ?

They have some Carvins in the background lol.

Personally I thought both of the guitars sounded horrendous.

Re: What amp was used here ?

WHAT ?

You did not like the driven Tele tone ?
How should an over driven Tele sound to you then ? Very curious now . . .

James

To me it sounded like over processed SS distortion. It sounded like the amp settings they used for Vai were used for the tele too.

Re: What amp was used here ?

The Vai stuff I know was a series III Carvin X100B with the Hot Rod Mod. I had one of the early Hot Rod Mod ones and it was an AMAZING sounding amp!! Still kicking myself for selling that one it KILLED any Marshall I have ever played! Non of the other X100B's I have played sounded like that one did.
Here is a live clip of me running my full X100B halfstack in a Church band
