what are signs of cold weather damage?

Re: what are signs of cold weather damage?

Slow temperature changes
If it is stored in a case in a cold area
It will be fine if
You let the the case acclimate to the room before opening

Slow temperature changes

Drastic changes will cause cracks and such

Re: what are signs of cold weather damage?

Sudden changes in temperature can be pretty bad at least in archtops. But I haven’t heard any horror stories beyond checking in the finish. Which is bad, don’t get me wrong.

Re: what are signs of cold weather damage?

I left a Fender Lead II in the trunk of a car for a few hours in the winter, in Northern MI. It jacked the finish up big time. It looked all milky and cloudy (blushed). Fender was experimenting with some stupid water based finish at the time and it was in the single digits. I also took it right out of the case went I got home. That was stupid.
REALLY cold temperatures can do a lot of damage!

Re: what are signs of cold weather damage?

As mentioned, fast extreme changes in temperature are bad for finishes, especially nitro.
But the biggest enemy is dryness, especially for acoustics though it can make frets sprout on electrics too.

I'm pretty careful to keep my acoustics well humidifed. And I keep a slightly damp sponge in the case with each electric.
Been doing that since the 70s when my friend Darrell Gilbert recommended it to me.

Re: what are signs of cold weather damage?

I need to do better humidifying my accoustic. I had a planet waves thing for it, but the sponge thing inside wore out. However, its very humid here in FLA. I made the mistake of putting one of my electrics away right after playing it in the summer. I ALWAYS wipe the guitars down, but the strap was wet from sweat and it rusted and ruined my straplocks and rusted out parts of the guitar..
