What are some good inexpensive 4x12s?

I've been looking at 4x12 cabs for my eventual new amp, an Edana, and was wondering what the opinions are of a few of these cabs. Note that the speakers will eventually all be replaced with a mixture of the two Celestion Heritage speakers. The style of music ranges from Blues to Classic Rock to Hard Rock and 80s Metal.

-Crate G412 cab: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Guitar/Amps?sku=487711

-Marshall 1960A Angled Cab: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Guitar/Amps?sku=482772

The last one is pushing the price a bit, but if it's that much better in sound quality and construction I'd go for it.

Also note that I'm looking to eventually replace the grill cloth on these cabs with a basketweave or salt-and-pepper style cloth for more of a vintage Marshall look. How hard is it to undertake something like that? Also, any other 4x12 cab suggestions in the price range here (from $0 to $600) are appreciated!

Used 1960's can be had much much cheaper than that if you look in the right places. They're so common that they often pop up for super cheap in classifieds, Ebay, and Craigslist.

Re: What are some good inexpensive 4x12s?

While I've never actually played a Marshall 1960A it's hard to avoid hearing all the really good things people say about them. That said, I think it would be a good idea to check out other cabs like the Randall and Rivera. If DSS or some of the other forum bros see this thread they can tell you about Rivera cabs.

Also, you might want to take a look at Avatar if you really want a 4x12 and Ear Candy if you want a really great 2x12 that sounds as good or better than a 4x12 to some people. I'm still waiting on my Ear Candy BuzzBomb, but a friend in the states who owns one emailed me some clips... and wow!

Carvin Legacy cabinets are supposed to be good, they come with vintage 30s and are quality built.

I know a guy who has one of THESE and it was pretty impressive. If you have your heart set on Celestions this isn't for you but as far as I'm concerned, I don't care if the speakers are made by EV, Celestion, Carvin, Jensen, or Fisher Price, if they sound decent and don't blow when I crank them, im pleased. Good luck man.

Avatar, Used 1960, Used Rivera.

Re: What are some good inexpensive 4x12s?

I have an Avatar v30/g12h30 and a used 1960lead vintage quad (v30s).

If I could go back, I would have gotten two 1960lead vintages.

The 1960 marshalls are better than the avatars imo.

Re: What are some good inexpensive 4x12s?

Looks like I'll be going with a used 1960 then, I saw one on Ebay for $200 yesterday, and the mono/stereo output is a cool option I could use to my advantage if I ever needed less volume or if I ever had a setup with a dummy load for effects like a delay or echo. Stereo delay and echo effects are pretty cool sounding. Thanks for the help guys!

Oh, almost forgot...is it very difficult to replace the grill cloth on a cab like that? Is replacing speakers difficult in a 1960 cab?

Trust us--Get the Earcandy. Your ears and BACK will thank us. Plus only two speakers to buy not four. I had the Avatars and the Marshall and the Earcandy is equal or above both. If you get the Marshall you'll be thrilled, but as the years go by, you'll be SOOO thankful you got a 2X12 that performs like a 4X12.

Well...I can't argue with that logic. Less weight is good. And EarCandy will make the cab with the vintage Marshall grill cloth for a small fee. Does it really have the bass presence and power of a 4x12 cab?

Re: What are some good inexpensive 4x12s?

haven't played through the ear candy, but it sounds cool, something i may look into myself.

+1 for the people who said avatar or a used marshall 1960. you can't beat avatar's prices for new gear, and you can get them with the same speakers that are typically in various models of marshall, mesa, ect cabs and you still get good build quality.

the marshalls are build really solid, and sounds damn good to my ears. the speakers are easy to replace, it's just a rear-loaded design so all you have to do is pop off the back baffle and you're good.

but if you already know which speakers you want and what look you're after, i'd recommend avatar above anything else.

Avatar!

Bought mine new about 3 years ago for a straight up 500 dollars. With the vintage 30's and G12H30's.

I've played through many other cabs and it seriously hangs with or sounds better than many high-end cabs.

If not avatar...go used...get a high end one that is beat to hell. Torn tolex isn't going to affect much of anything soundwise. marshall, mesa, rivera, or orange. most of which come with some sort of celestion set up.

Yes, it does. Most 4X12s anyway. I don't think it would match a Boogie cab but I've put it against a few other 4X12s and it sounded better. I've had the Avatars and they are great 4X12s. I thought the 2X12 sounded good until I put it up against a 4X12 and it sounded like half a cab. Don't get me wrong, it is a GREAT sounding 2X12, but the Earcandy just acts like a 4X12.

Re: What are some good inexpensive 4x12s?

I'm actually selling my Carvin Legacy 4x12. It sounds great and kills marshall cabs (i've put them head to head). The only reason I'm not keeping it is because it's too large and hard for me to transport. I got the same cab in a 2x12 version. PLUS I'm in NY. I HAVE to sell it so I'd be willing to let it go for $400.

I've had two of them and they are AWESOME cabs IMHO. One of the best sounding 4X12s I've ever owned and the coolest looking too.
