What are some good tricks to approximate a guitar setup?

Re: What are some good tricks to approximate a guitar setup?

Yep. It's a process. The tech may not technically do a poor job but it takes a few days of faffing to get the setup to settle in. Which is why the player can ultimately do a better job over the course of a week or so if he has educated himself.

Lol. Most techs are just a few notches above amateur making a few bucks over minimum. Why are you offended that the individual can do a better job for himself if he takes the time to learn it.

OP...buy yourself a copy of Dan Erlewine's book, How To Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great. An excellent reference.

In principle, this is true on many guitar tasks and I think all guitar players should seek to control their own setup understanding and maintenance, but there are many things a good professional tech can always do better due to repetition, techniques, tools and experience.

The problem is finding a good professional tech that wants to actually work at dialing in a guitar to the subtlety and nuance that a player comes to desire -and being proficient enough to make it cost effective for a player. If you go to a guitar store and ask for a setup 9 out 10 techs will only ask you string size and maybe a action preference question -thats it. It's sad.

I think no one means to disrespect professionals
But it is a business and they have to move product to make a living
Time is money

unless the customer is willing to sit there for an hour or so
as the tech tweaks and the customer plays then repeat

Most just do a basic setup which isn't personal at all
Its business

Goob on the other hand offers a more personal service
That most dont

The owner can learn a lot of this and perform this from the couch while watching TV

I do

I dont want to

If I lived near Goob I would develop a relationship
And drop it off with him

Re: What are some good tricks to approximate a guitar setup?

Look, there have to be some cats out there who DO know what to do with their guitars and don't need the services of a competent and experienced guitar tech. In this day and age, it's sink or swim - because who really wants to go to Ninth Circle of Hell Music (GC) for a setup? YouTube only made the problem worse, because 9/10ths of it is just an opinion or a bald-faced lie. Truth and knowledge are in short supply here in the information age.

But in my experience, most players don't understand how to get the best performance out of their instrument, and end up frustrated. Some are just dumb as rocks. I still run into guys who've been playing bars for decades who didn't know WTH a string winder was! Or that you could buy them for a buck at the front counter. The reason I took my shop back home is because I was fed up with time wasters asking me what the best pickup is, or the best strings, or what the best tonewood for the ultimate guitar would be. (Hint - there is NO best, there is only what works for you)

I will grant you that there are players who DON'T need help servicing their stuff, but for those that DO - I and a selection of cats around the country stand ready to make it right for them.
