What are some interesting alternate tunings?

Re: What are some interesting alternate tunings?

ever heard of My Bloody Valentine? Their guitarist, Kevin Shields, uses all kinds of weird tunings. I've been meaning to try a few...

Re: What are some interesting alternate tunings?

I used my own (AFAIK) open B tuning for one song when I played guitar for this singer songwriter several years ago. If I remember right, it went (high to low):

B-B-F#-B-F#-B

It's basically two sets of fifth chords an octave apart from each other, with two drone strings on top. It has more in common with dulcimer or hurdy gurdy than a guitar. I did this on my '68 Guild F50 (all maple jumbo), using a standard set of 13's. So there was also a great difference in tension and buzz from string to string, which added to the unique sound.

Over all, that gig sucked, because she wasn't that good (typical I-moved-to-L.A.-from-Texas-to-try-and-make-it-in-the-industry-despite-my-lack-of-anything-interesting-to-offer singer/songwriter), and I needed to bring three guitars to every [non-paying] gig: that Guild, a standard acoustic, and a nylon-stringed acoustic...plus my harmonicas. But that one tuning was actually pretty cool.

I have done the "5 tuning in E" (EBEEBE) kind of like drop D in smaller segemnts... Not great for slide. I like Vestapol (DADF#AD)
