What are you doing for a solo boost?

Title says it all really. Clean boost pedal? Compressor? EQ? OD/Disto? Amp has a boost circuit? Some combination of the above?

Back when I had a Mesa DC-3, I used to use my BOSS BD-2 as a boost for solos. I set the drive at 30% and the level at around 70%. It worked very well.

Re: What are you doing for a solo boost?

I'm using a Boss GE-7....give it a lil Mid hump..then Crank the level....get great saturation and a "virtual 3rd channel".....and IF i need it to sound really fat...I'll use my EHX Line Booster.....but usually opt for the GE-7...there's just so much you can do with it.

Re: What are you doing for a solo boost?

I used to use a GE-7 (mid hump and overall gain) into a single-channel Marshall. It worked great with an amp that was already into "crunch" territory.

With a cleaner amp (Fender or Marshall turned down) the clean boost gives to much volume increase before upping the dirt level. So, I have recently switched to a modded SD-1; it gives independent control over the amount of dirt adn the amount of volume. I no longer have the GE-7 to do an A/B test, but to my ear, the mods have voiced the SD-1 pretty much the way I used to set the GE-7.

That's exactly what I'm doing currently. Marshall JMP 50w MV combo with the pre-amp volume around six - crunch that cleans up with the guitar volume. Hit it with the GE-7 for solos. I get a nice boost and bags of sustain - it's so easy to coax into controlled feedback.

Re: What are you doing for a solo boost?

Yup - I did it years ago into a JMP 2203, then a JCM800 2203, then a 4010 (2204 chassis) and finally my present 18-WAtter clone. It always worked great. I always ran the preamp on the MV Marshalls around 6 or 8. Surprisingly, the 18 Watter works about the same with its volume on 6.

Don't try this on a Vibro Champ, though. Yuck.

Re: What are you doing for a solo boost?

I turn my volume control from about 7.5 to 10 and dig in with my pick!

I do have some pedals I do use for this from time to time but the volume control/pick attack works much better!

Re: What are you doing for a solo boost?

I use the reverb loops on my amps as a boost. (I use an external digital reverb)
I bypass the reverb tank, have cables running from the reverb send to a foot switch, and then back out to the reverb return. I control the amount of boost with the reverb knob. There ya have it, simple, variable boost.

That is genius!

Re: What are you doing for a solo boost?

i use a boss BD-2 monte modded with h20 mod. its set pretty darn clean, but it has enough on it to give it a little more bite.

Re: What are you doing for a solo boost?

I've got a Mesa Loanstar Special. I don't use any effects in the FX loop so I use that for a solo boost. Sometimes I use a dedicated patch in my GT-6...usually the same sound as the rhythm just goosed up a few dB....maybe some delay too.

Re: What are you doing for a solo boost?

SmartPeopleFactory Ego Booster. It can function as a flat clean boost or you can Eq the boost.

I had an "Ice Cube Sustain Coupler" in my silverface Twin Reverb, back around 1977-78. It did the same thing, except you used the existing reverb switch to turn it off and on, IIRC. There's a pic of one here (the little blue thing):

Re: What are you doing for a solo boost?

I use a Keeley BD-2 Phat Mod. Everything else is set right to the edge and the pedal makes it sing.

Re: What are you doing for a solo boost?

I've done it a few ways: OD boost, EQ, comp, and volume pedal. I've also made "solo" patches in a multi-fx. My faves are:

#1 An OD set for boost - I like this because not only can you add volume, but also a bit of hair.
#2 An EQ - I like this because I can add boost plus change the EQ to add some cut

Volume pedal is a nice, simple, and variable alternative - as long as you are totally into the one sound you are using.

MFX can't be beat if wholesale sound/effects are called for.

I don't like a comp so much as for a solo I usually prefer to let the dynamics run the range. CHanges the sound in a way I don't like in that situation.

Re: What are you doing for a solo boost?

I don't tend to boost for solos. In most of the bands I've played in the guitars have tended to be pretty loud in the first place ;).
