what are you "thinking" when playing?

Re: what are you "thinking" when playing?

I listen to the song in my head if its the first track. After that, I listen to the part thats playing.

Re: what are you "thinking" when playing?

well, when playing live, its usually "Dont fall off stage....dont look at her boobs....dont fall off stage". Last time I looked at a chicks boobies live, I couldnt find my way back into the song.

man i really need to learn that stuff.... i just play the blues based off of some wierd scale and i don't even know what it is... (it sounds good tho..)

Re: what are you "thinking" when playing?

If I have to think about what I'm doing... I'm SCREWED !! My playing will
stink :yell: At the risk of sounding like a screwball ,When I'm ON!!!
I have to feel it, Like being in a zone? Spritully or emotionly ?? I feel the
beating or the drums on my back, And the pulsing rhythm of the Bass and I
just fire away :firing: It take's a while to get to that ZONE! You need the
Band Energy & Crowd Energy (a few c0cktails will help :laugh2: ) But when
ya get to that zone... It's like Magic :wizard:

Re: what are you "thinking" when playing?

do you guys actually know that you are playing a quin-tipplet (if played) over an improvising?

in other words are you able to write the score afterwars?

Re: what are you "thinking" when playing?

I don't think while I'm playing. When I come up with riffs and stuff now I don't even bother to try to stay in a key, I just do what I think sounds OK, then sit down afterwards and try to work out if there's a scale anywhere that will allow me to solo over the mess I've just come up with :laugh2:

Sloppy, I know.

If I come up with something I like I throw a tape in the 4-track and play it again. I'll sketch out a bit of tab on the notepad next to the 4-track if it's anything I'll struggle to remember (like if I come up with something that's outside my comfort zone, I need the tab I've sketched out and the tape if I want to figure out what I did).

Maybe the fact that I don't think while I play is why I find it hard to play outside my comfort zone :yell:

Re: what are you "thinking" when playing?

Personally, I don't really think about the technical side too much when improvising. I need to know where my fingers are and what scale I'm in, but I don't analyse it at all.

I don't think 'I'll play a triplet in a minute' but in my head I know when it's time to double speed or whatever.

I hear the notes in my head at the same instant my fingers are pressing the strings.

It's a bit like a racing driver, if he took time to think about what he was doing - he'd be dead.

It's the same for fast improvisation, think about it and you'll lose it.

I think that's what attracts many of us to soloing rather than rhythm playing.

it's that sort of 'on the edge' feeling. I know that Rid, Marin, TO and a few others know what I mean.

In fact everyone on that jam knows what I mean.

Sometimes think how good sound my tones and love the amp, and sometimes i hate It.
Sometimes just play without thinking.

Write a score...I have not written one note since 1988 :laugh2:
what's a score? is that the freaky shit you read when a bunch of dots off of a clef? lol, i don't remember how to read that anymore... i just draw 6 lines and put fret numbers on them :D

Re: what are you "thinking" when playing?

My problem is that if I start to think too much about the direction I'm taking a song, I'll usually screw up. :smack:

I work best when I know and anticipate the changes and interact (eye contact and body language) with my band mates. The rest is all about "feel." Hmmmm, my wife would be proud to hear that I'm getting in touch with my more sensitive side :laugh2:

haha. its hard not to look people strait in the eyes when your playing live. or at least for me. what do you guys look at when you are playing live?

Re: what are you "thinking" when playing?

Usually I am thinking I should have paid more attention at guitar lessons when I was a kid but if I get passed that, I try to focus on the groove and riding it.

Re: what are you "thinking" when playing?

"I wonder what would I could wear on my head to make me better. Maybe a bucket, maybe a tophat, maybe a 10 gallon hat, maybe a head-band, maybe..."

Re: what are you "thinking" when playing?

I'm usually thinking...."damn I suck....I need to practice more.....I'm tired of playing the same old crap licks".

I can.
But i don't think of it when i improvise. I just try to "feel" the groove, and try to compliment that.
I don't even think about scales much. I think more about the underlying harmony.
