What are you thoughts on 2 Greenbacks vs. 1 Vin 30 and 1 G12H30 (Hellatones)

I'd like to yank the Eminences out of my 2x12 and either go with the GB's or the already broke in Hellatone Vintage 30 and G12H30. For a 50 watt head. all dirty tones. Do you think the GB's will stay tight? Will the GB's be smoother than the mixed pair?

If it is the Splawn cabinet in your sig, the Governor is similar to a V30 and the Man 'O War is similar to a G12H30, if I remember correctly (always a challenge). Both are higher wattage than the Celestions and probably tighter. What kind of sound are you going for? If you are looking for more of a scooped "metal" or 80s shred tone, you might try the G12T75s, they have less mids than the V30s. Or, if you want a nice tight sound, check out Eminence Legend GB12s, they are voiced similar to GBs, but a little smoother on top and a little more bass, they are also higher wattage so they will stay a tighter when pushed. I have one cabinet with a GB12 and a Texas Heat and another with a GB12 and a Wizard. Both sound good, but my favorite combo is the GB12 and TH. You might try one GB12 with your Man O War.

Maybe your speakers aren't broken in yet?

I used to use Celestions, but the new ones are made in China, you can get Eminence MIA speakers for the same price or better, and, IMHO, they are better made and sound just as good or better. The biggest problem I have with Eminence is that they have too many choices now.

<$0.02...

Tough call.....GBs are my fave celestions...they crunch nice and cut though great..have nice lower mids and a little sizzle on top...but they are not as tight in the highs or bass as a H or a V 30. I have not tried that combo, but I understand the H30 really fills out the sound and mellows out that nasty high mids of the V30 when they are combined..kind of a best of both worlds...I'd like to try it.

What kind of amp, and how *much* gain Steve? If you are talking Cream/Skynyrd up to say early 80s Scorpions or VH1/2 levels of gain...GBs should be plenty tight....but if you are going to go more than that, or just want tighter bass/more articulation, I'd go with the V/H combo.

V30s and H30s are both a lot more efficient than greenies. They'll really dominate. I quit mixing speakers when I realized how hard it is to get different drivers with similar bandwidth products. The Emi site lists BPs for their stuff, IIRC.

to clear things up...the man o war is the eminence version of the G12T-75 and the Governor is the V30 and the Wizard is the G12H and the private jack is the G12M greenback. i saw one of those mixed up above and wanted to make sure you were clear as to what is what between the two lines.

Thanks for clarifying that Mike, at least I was half right... I may have to try a Man O War sometime.

The Splawn's 1st gear is what I like most, which is said to be a hot-rodded Plexi voicing. It's nice and clear and with the gain lowered does the 'Free' type of thing and with the OD kicked in the VH thing. The Emi's really have a harsh upper frequency thing going. I've read one guy saying it took his Gov/MOW pair about 2 months of gigging to break-in. That's quite a bit of cranked playing time. Might take me two years to do that LOL I've only been playing through them a week but they still sound the same.

I know the Wizard I had in my Traynor took a good bit of playing cd's through it to soften up. Maybe I'll give 'em a little more time before I make the change. Thanks guys.

I wonder if anyone's ever paired a Greenback (instead of a Vintage 30) with a G12H30?

I've got a bassy Deftones CD blasting through the cab right now but would still like opinions.

I currantly am running a Hellatone 30/Greenback with my 18 watter and it sounds phenominal. I think that it is a great combo for the right amp. For example, I plugged my buddy's '68 Princeton into my cab and it sounded terrible. That same amp into a V30/Hellatone 30 sounds incredible. The V30/Hellatone just didn't sound right to my ears with the 18 watt, but in comes the GB and it was tight, warm, cuts through. The mix of eq's widened the overall spectrum making it sound fuller to my ears. I can't say enough good things about this combo!

My favorite mix, but you're right. Some amps are not the best with them. Plus just to go a bit deeper, I've got an amp that sounds great through my 2X12 and not as good through my 4X12, with the same speaker mix in both.
